Waste Collection Operator

As a Waste Collection Operator, you will be responsible for operating front-end trucks that service a diverse range of multi-family residential and commercial routes, efficiently removing and transporting waste or recyclables in accordance with customer agreements.

This role involves servicing multiple clients daily based on assigned routes. The collected waste must then be transferred to the designated station, landfill, or drop-off site.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate commercial frontload or ancillary equipment along specified routes to mechanically gather solid waste and transport it to post-collection facilities.
  • Access container enclosures or gates to retrieve cans, and if necessary, maneuver 3-4 yard cans into position for dumping.
  • Conduct daily pre- and post-trip inspections; complete and submit a vehicle condition report at the end of each shift.
  • Engage courteously with customers and the general public along the route to address inquiries or respond to requests; inform the supervisor of any issues needing management attention.
  • Maintain cleanliness by removing loose trash from the truck and surrounding area during the dumping process to ensure a tidy customer site and safety along roads and highways.
  • Keep and submit a DOT logbook, daily route/productivity sheet, and vehicle condition report as mandated by law or company policy.
  • Skillfully maneuver the truck in and out of tight spaces, utilizing mirrors for backing up.
  • Utilize a key map and GPS for locating service addresses.
  • Adhere to safe operating practices, including lockout/tagout procedures to ensure the proper functioning of the truck.
  • Monitor operations to identify loose debris, using mirrors or direct sight and/or listening for debris falling onto the truck during the dumping operation; visually inspect the customer site before and after dumping.
  • Comply with all DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, and EPA regulations and standards.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of commercial driving experience or a CDL school certificate.
  • Ability to meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards.
  • Demonstrated capability to safely operate the truck and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of the truck and its components along with basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
  • Ability to control equipment operations; maneuver the truck in and out of tight spaces, using mirrors to back distances of approximately 120 feet or more.
  • Capability to recognize unacceptable waste (such as gasoline or other flammable materials).
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend associated documents and maps.
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to change and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Physical ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively using proper lifting techniques.
  • Coordination of two or more limbs while sitting or standing.
  • Adherence to all company safety policies and procedures.
Physical/Mental Demands:
  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.

Visual Requirements:

Includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus due to constant maneuvering of the vehicle in tight and high-traffic areas.


  • Regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.
  • Sitting may be required up to 75% of the time due to the primary function of driving.
  • Ability to work in typically loud conditions.
Working Conditions:
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise, humidity, rainy/stormy conditions, extreme temperatures (depending on the season), moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Work in an outdoor environment up to 100% of the time.
  • Continuous operation away from the branch location throughout the day.
  • Occasional work in high, precarious places.
  • Constant work in motor vehicle traffic conditions.
  • Typically loud work environment.
