Overview of the Position

The Breast Imaging Specialist is responsible for conducting a range of technical procedures related to both screening and diagnostic mammography.

Key Responsibilities

- Operate mammographic imaging equipment and related devices efficiently.

- Position patients accurately, utilizing immobilization techniques when necessary.

- Calculate exposure parameters and assist medical professionals during procedures.

- Execute quality control measures pertinent to mammography.

- Assess radiographs for diagnostic integrity and procure additional images as required.

- Prepare and organize medical supplies, adhering to aseptic protocols when applicable.

- Clearly communicate procedures to patients to ensure understanding.

- Document mammographic procedures and supply usage in the designated systems.

- Mentor new Mammographers and provide educational support to students in training.

- Aid in the collection and maintenance of statistical data relevant to the department.

- Exhibit proficiency in all breast imaging techniques, including interventional procedures.

- Oversee mammography operations and ensure accuracy in supply charges.

- Perform additional related duties as required.

Required Qualifications Education

Completion of an accredited program that qualifies for registry/certification or currently holds the necessary credentials.

Technologists qualifying post-April 28, 1999, must fulfill specific mammography training requirements, including a minimum of 40 hours of documented education in the field.

Experience

Level I candidates must secure ARRT certification upon employment.

A minimum of 25 mammography examinations must be performed under the supervision of a qualified individual. At least 8 hours of training in any modality (e.g., digital) is required before independent operation.

Level II candidates should possess at least two years of experience as a Mammography Technologist, performing a minimum of 200 mammography exams within a 24-month timeframe.

Level III candidates require a minimum of four years of experience in the specialty modality for promotion consideration.

Certifications and Licensure

- ARRT certification in radiography

- ARRT advanced certification in mammography

- FDA/MQSA qualification, including compliance with MQSA CE requirements of at least 15 CEUs within a 36-month period, with a minimum of 6 CEUs in each mammographic modality utilized.

- BLS certification
