Job Summary

The MRI Imaging Specialist is responsible for executing a range of intricate, specialized, and technical functions associated with the operation of high-field strength magnets.

Key Responsibilities

1. Conduct safety screenings for patients prior to MRI procedures.
2. Collaborate with radiologists in protocol development and procedure execution.
3. Initiate IVs and administer contrast agents as per established protocols.
4. Assess the technical quality of MR scans, compile processed images, and ensure proper labeling.
5. Manage patient scheduling and assist with administrative tasks.
6. Document MR procedures and supplies in the electronic health record (EHR).
7. Operate power injectors for contrast media administration.
8. Maintain precise patient records.
9. Provide orientation and training for new MRI technologists.
10. Educate and mentor student technologists.
11. Address the psychological and physical needs of patients undergoing MRI procedures.
12. Utilize the Image Archival System effectively.

Essential Functions

Perform advanced tasks related to the operation of high-field strength magnets and associated equipment to generate specialized radiographic images of targeted body areas. Position patients appropriately for MR scans, employing immobilization and protective measures as necessary. Screen patients for MR safety prior to procedure performance. Assist radiologists with procedure execution and administer contrast media as directed. Evaluate MR scans for technical quality, compile processed images, and ensure proper labeling.

Coordinate patient scheduling and flow across multiple MRI locations. Support the education and training of new physicians, including interns, residents, and fellows, as applicable. Collaborate with radiologists and physicists to develop innovative protocols and MR imaging techniques unique to the institution. Facilitate research initiatives by utilizing provided scanning protocols. Demonstrate expertise in over 100 MR protocols within the health system and instruct new technologists, physicians, and researchers on their correct application.

Qualifications

Education:
Completion of a program that meets eligibility requirements for registry/certification or currently holds the necessary registry or certification.

Experience:
Level I must achieve ARRT certification within 18 months of employment. Level II requires a minimum of two years of experience as an MRI technologist. Level III necessitates at least four years of experience in the specialty modality for promotion.

Licensure and Certification:
Certification in one of the following is required: Radiography (R), Radiation Therapy (T), Nuclear Medicine Technology (N), CNMT, ARDMS, or registry eligible for Magnetic Resonance (MR). ARRT or ARMRIT registration in Magnetic Resonance (MR) is required within 18 months of employment. BLS certification is also necessary.
