Position Overview

Are you driven by a passion for renewable energy and the conservation of wildlife? As a Senior Environmental Specialist, you will utilize your advanced technical skills to manage the complexities of permitting renewable energy sites while safeguarding essential wildlife resources. In this crucial position, you will interpret and ensure compliance with regulatory standards, shaping strategies related to environmental policy and compliance matters. As a vital environmental authority, you will collaborate with industry leaders, governmental bodies, and environmental organizations to promote sustainable business practices. Leverage your extensive knowledge in environmental engineering or scientific disciplines to make a significant impact on our operations and strategic initiatives.

This role is hybrid-remote, requiring occasional travel primarily for day trips.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement company responses to emerging and ongoing environmental challenges, assessing their impact on operations.
  • Create and uphold company policies, procedures, and programs, along with implementation plans for business units.
  • Take a leadership role in addressing emerging environmental issues.
  • Provide effective training and compliance assurance to business managers to achieve regulatory adherence.
  • Conduct complex environmental strategy, policy, or research tasks requiring independent analysis.
  • Act as an environmental expert on external committees, liaising with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, industry groups, and research providers.
  • Exercise independent judgment in developing environmental management systems and programs to address ongoing issues.
  • Plan and execute special projects, including determining the need for external consultancy services and managing contracts.
  • Advise on compliance strategies for managing environmental assets.
  • Draft permit applications and advocate for operational needs with regulators.
  • Support business units in executing environmental plans and programs, including training, permitting, quality assurance, and compliance activities.
  • Engage in additional duties that align with Alliant Energy's values and mission to serve customers and strengthen communities.

Educational Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering; environmental studies; physical or natural sciences; or a related field is preferred.
  • Master's or advanced degree is preferred.
  • Relevant environmental, engineering, and/or project management certifications are preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in environmental engineering, science, compliance planning, or environmental resource management within the utility sector, consulting, or government.
  • Direct project management experience is preferred.

Additional Requirements

  • A valid driver's license is required.

  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with regulatory agencies, utility groups, and other industries.
  • Ability to proactively manage environmental issues, assess complex regulations, and communicate solutions effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Familiarity with utility industry policies and operations is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer software programs and environmental modeling tools.
  • Ability to thrive in a diverse work environment.
