Position Overview

Under the general oversight of the Nursing Director and direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in the surgical environment by fulfilling the surgical scrub responsibilities for various minor and major surgical operations, based on individual competencies across different surgical specialties. This role involves assisting physicians and nursing staff in diverse medical and technical procedures, adhering to the hospital's philosophy, practice standards, and regulatory requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
• Certification as a Surgical Technologist is essential.
• A minimum of two years of experience as an operating room technician is preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make informed decisions regarding the sterilization of equipment and instruments.
  • Manage biohazardous waste disposal effectively.
  • Perform housekeeping duties to maintain a clean environment.
  • Facilitate patient care and ensure smooth patient flow.
  • Adhere to hospital standards for competent performance of duties.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Create a safe surgical environment.
  • Utilize medical equipment safely and effectively.
  • Contribute to cost-effective patient care solutions.
  • Implement medical and surgical asepsis principles in line with national standards and hospital policies.
  • Ensure physical safety for patients during procedures.
  • Account for surgical items such as sponges, needles, and instruments.
  • Support hospital personnel in their operational duties.
  • Assist surgeons during scrubbed cases.
  • Prepare supplies for upcoming surgical cases.
  • Exhibit a cooperative work attitude towards colleagues, management, patients, and visitors.
  • Maintain a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA and infection control standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instrument processing from decontamination to sterile storage.
  • Check operating rooms for cleanliness and availability of necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Select packs, supplies, and instruments using the surgeon's preference card.
  • Perform surgical hand scrubs and don sterile gowns and gloves according to established policies.
  • Maintain proper sterile techniques during procedures.
  • Conduct sponge, instrument, and needle counts as per policy.
  • Handle specimens according to established protocols.
  • Transport instruments to the decontamination area following proper techniques.
  • Restock operating rooms to maintain established levels.
  • Adhere to attendance and punctuality policies.
  • Complete assigned tasks efficiently and independently.
  • Exhibit a positive and proactive attitude.
  • Be flexible with personal schedules as departmental needs fluctuate.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and training sessions.
  • Communicate relevant information regarding patients and staff as necessary.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in all interactions.
  • Keep supervisors informed of work progress.
  • Demonstrate proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Anticipate and meet customer needs promptly.

  • Follow hospital and departmental safety protocols.
  • Report unsafe conditions to supervisors.
