Position Overview

The primary role of the individual in this position is to execute advanced mechanical and technical tasks to ensure the upkeep and repair of municipal vehicles. This role operates under the guidance of the Fleet Supervisor, allowing for significant autonomy in decision-making and initiative. The main responsibilities are carried out in a workshop setting, utilizing electrical and pneumatic maintenance tools, while also dealing with exposure to various automotive fluids and chemicals.

This position stands apart from the Fleet Mechanic role due to the employee's capability to work independently and their advanced troubleshooting and fabrication skills.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties
  • Conducts inspections and performs both preventive and corrective maintenance on the City's fleet, including gas and diesel vehicles, light and heavy-duty equipment, motorcycles, and other municipal vehicles;
  • Executes maintenance and safety inspections, including the examination and replacement of components such as starters, alternators, batteries, hydraulic systems, and brake components;
  • Services vehicles with necessary fluids and lubricants, performs tune-ups, adjusts clutches and brakes, and manages tire mounting and balancing;
  • Diagnoses and repairs various systems, including mechanical, electrical, heating and cooling, emissions, hydraulic, and power train systems;
  • Diagnoses and rectifies issues with electronic engine, brake, and transmission controls;
  • Assists in estimating costs and labor for work orders;
  • Replaces and rebuilds engines, clutch assemblies, transmissions, and rear axles;
  • Performs body repair and replacement work on vehicles when feasible;
  • Maintains accurate records of hours worked, parts used, and activities in a maintenance tracking system;
  • Keeps repair, inspection, and maintenance logs and documentation;
  • Prepares requests for parts and equipment purchases;
  • Maintains and repairs shop tools, equipment, and workspaces;
  • Assists in the training of new personnel;
  • Adheres to City policies, procedures, and safety standards in all work activities.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Operates various light and heavy-duty equipment during emergency situations;
  • Works assigned shifts, including potential seasonal night shifts for snow operations;
  • Available for on-call duties after regular hours to address emergency situations;
  • Performs other related tasks as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Principles, practices, tools, and objectives related to vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair;
  • Installation, diagnosis, servicing, and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, brake systems, steering and suspension systems, hydraulic systems, and vehicle electrical systems;
  • Safety standards related to automotive and equipment repair.
Ability to:
  • Follow both written and verbal instructions;
  • Read and interpret technical manuals and documents;
  • Utilize diagnostic equipment for vehicles and machinery;
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools;
  • Perform maintenance on emergency response vehicles;
  • Plan projects and accurately estimate material needs;
  • Use a personal computer for relevant applications.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED, supplemented with specialized training in automotive and heavy equipment;
  • Ten (10) years of experience in medium to heavy-duty repair work, including one (1) year of diagnostic experience;
OR
  • Five (5) years of experience in medium to heavy-duty repair work and two (2) relevant ASE certifications;
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the necessary knowledge and abilities to perform the work.
