Position Overview:
We are looking for a Product Category Leader to join our team at the Fort Lauderdale Support Center. The ideal candidate is a seasoned category expert who is enthusiastic about our offerings and consumer base, ready to spearhead initiatives that attract new boating enthusiasts into the West Marine family. This role will oversee the purchasing function within specific categories, leading the development and implementation of product assortments across our interconnected commerce platforms.

  • Extensive experience in category management or purchasing within a multi-store retail environment.

  • Proficient in utilizing data to optimize product assortments, pricing strategies, and promotional schedules tailored to various channels and categories.
  • Customer-centric mindset aimed at creating enthusiastic advocates through the right products, positioned effectively, and priced competitively.
  • Capable of developing a strategic marketing approach for key products while achieving financial objectives.
  • Possess strong collaborative and cross-functional skills to guide strategies from initial concept to successful execution.
  • Proven track record of establishing industry-leading vendor partnerships that yield innovative assortments and mutually beneficial growth.
  • Experienced negotiator in a dynamic, growth-oriented industry.
Main Responsibilities:
  • Establish business strategies informed by data and trends at both division and category levels.
  • Implement and manage optimal product assortments to meet established targets.
  • Design compelling product assortments that are regionally relevant, seasonally appropriate, and focused on marine activities.
  • Collaborate with the Merchandise Planner to ensure the overall health of inventory in assigned departments, including negotiating promotional support and vendor buybacks. Regularly assess underperforming inventory and propose innovative solutions.
  • Stay informed on consumer insights and industry trends, ensuring these are reflected in product assortments and marketing strategies.

Education, Experience & Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in business or a related field.
  • Over five years of experience in Category Management or Merchandising within a retail buying context, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Strong understanding and application of merchandising mathematics.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Exceptional presentation abilities.
  • Effective conflict management skills.
  • Strong track record in developing vendor relationships.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows, Office Suite, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Familiarity with Relex and JDA is advantageous.
  • Team-oriented leader who fosters collaboration and addresses relevant issues through teamwork.
  • Excellent communicator who encourages open dialogue and listens effectively.
  • Demonstrates adaptability and integrity in all actions.
  • Strategic and analytical thinker who provides vision and encourages innovation in both product and process.
  • Knowledge or experience in boating is highly desirable.
