As the premier planetarium in Alaska, the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Planetarium & Visualization Theater (PVT) offers an engaging venue to investigate the universe, from the tiniest organisms to the farthest celestial bodies.

The facility is available for private events when not utilized for educational purposes or public presentations.

Key Responsibilities:
Possess a broad understanding of astronomy topics, including recent developments and discoveries.

Demonstrated experience in conducting planetarium presentations for K-12 and public audiences, coordinating schedules, collaborating with guest speakers, and managing public relations.

Capability to create new content for the Planetarium & Visualization Theater, implement newly acquired shows, and enhance software functionalities.

Experience in maintaining planetarium system components and supervising student staff.
Exhibit meticulous attention to detail and punctuality in completing assigned responsibilities.
Strong communication skills are essential for effective and timely interactions.

Self-motivated with robust problem-solving abilities and computing skills, adept at developing content for courses and live presentations, as well as executing pre-prepared shows for both public and private functions.


The University of Alaska Fairbanks seeks a candidate who can fulfill traditional work hours on campus while also being available for evening and weekend commitments as necessary to support show presentations and events.


Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Astronomy, Physics, or a related discipline.
Experience in operating and maintaining a digital planetarium/visualization system.
Plus two years of experience in audio/visual technology, networking, and/or computer programming, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.

Position Overview:
This role is based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. It is a full-time, term-funded, exempt staff position that includes a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.

The University offers an attractive compensation package that encompasses retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays annually, tuition waivers for employees and their family members, and affordable medical, dental, and vision care coverage.

New hires will be classified according to the University of Alaska Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 79, based on their qualifications and experience.


This is an on-campus role with standard hours, but evening and weekend work will be required as necessary to fulfill responsibilities related to shows and events.

To qualify for this position, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions.

This position is term-funded and is subject to annual review for contract renewal at the discretion of the University.
