Role Purpose

Community Safety Assistants are uniformed civilian staff engaged in a mentorship-style program aimed at preparing them for a future as Police Officers. Responsibilities encompass administrative and clerical tasks, as well as the processing of department arrestees. The varied assignments ensure that Community Safety Assistants acquire a comprehensive range of operational and administrative experience. Candidates must fulfill specific criteria by completing a designated college curriculum and a physical fitness program before being eligible for appointment as Police Officers.

Key Responsibilities

Community Safety Assistants undertake a variety of administrative, clerical, and support tasks as directed by their supervisors. They are not authorized to independently perform law enforcement activities. Key duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Engaging in and completing academic and physical training programs in preparation for future Police Officer responsibilities, including cultural competency training.
  • Managing and directing incoming phone calls.
  • Providing assistance to citizens both over the phone and in person.
  • Operating communication equipment.
  • Carrying out administrative tasks such as typing, filing, and data entry, along with assisting in special projects as assigned.
  • Supporting safety education initiatives, community outreach, and recruitment events.

Employment Conditions
  • A standard 40-hour work week, with days off assigned.
  • Completion of 24 college credits with a minimum GPA of 2.0 is required. Community Safety Assistants may take up to 6 credit hours per semester during work hours.
  • Compliance with the rules, regulations, and code of conduct of the Milwaukee Police Department is mandatory.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must be at least 17 years old at the time of application and not exceed 20 years old on the start date of the Community Safety Assistant program.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent is required.
  • U.S. citizenship or residency in the U.S. for at least five years prior to application is necessary.
  • A valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Applicants must be physically capable of performing the duties associated with the Community Safety Assistant and Police Officer roles.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is required.
  • Passing a pre-employment medical and psychological evaluation, along with drug screening, is mandatory.
Disqualifiers
  • Felony convictions.
  • Dishonorable discharge from military service.
  • Misdemeanor convictions related to domestic violence.
  • Previous disqualification from a Milwaukee Police Department background investigation.
  • Termination or resignation with pending charges from the Milwaukee Police or Fire Department.
  • Recent illegal drug use or possession.
  • Any form of falsification or misrepresentation in the application process.

  • A willingness to learn effective communication skills for interacting with a diverse population.
  • Aptitude for developing excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to accurately document information and manage records.
  • Capability to follow instructions from supervisors.
  • Exhibit good moral character, integrity, and a positive attitude.
  • Motivation to complete educational and physical training programs.
