Job Description

The Risk Enterprise Data Management Director will assist the Enterprise Data Executive in implementing the organization's data governance strategy by advocating for solutions aligned to our data principles, policies, and standards. The role will support the Risk Management organization's data needs and ensure that all stakeholders adhere to SMBC's data management policy, frameworks, processes, procedures, and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead a cross-functional team of data analysts and/or contractors in implementing and maintaining a robust data governance structure to bolster the risk management framework.
  • Prioritize data requirements, perform project planning activities, and seek diverse points of view for optimal data solutions.
  • Work with business to define key data elements used in products, risk activities, and reports. Collect required business and technical metadata, document data flows, data profiling, develop, and implement data quality rules.
  • Comprehensive analysis of data or new requirements for the preparation of risk reports and efforts to consolidate data into centralized data warehouses and pinpoint risk trends.
  • Drive issue remediation and coordinate with the business to remediate data quality, regulatory, internal audit, and management self-identified issues.
  • Work with our technology partners to implement best practices and innovative technology solutions necessary to support the data governance program.
  • Stay updated on changes in regulations and industry best practices related to risk management and reporting and help translate regulatory rules and requirements into data policies, rules, and standards.
  • Ensure that all risk reporting activities comply with relevant regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Understand all aspects of data governance policy, framework(s), and other key data governance standards and procedures.
  • Develop key metrics, scorecards, dashboards, and visualization tools to effectively communicate risk information to the Chief Data Office and senior management.
  • Work with risk and technology partners to implement best practices and innovative solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of risk reporting.

Requirements

  • BS/BA, Master's degree preferred: MBA or MA/MS in Risk Management, Finance, Economics, Accounting, Management Information Systems, or related field from an accredited university.
  • Proven 10+ years of relevant experience in risk management verticals such as market, credit, liquidity, and market risk reporting, product control, financial analysis, and reporting. Understanding of data management and governance, needed for a robust risk management data program. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and identify key insights, acting as a visionary on data management.
  • Broad understanding of current regulatory environment covering BCBS 239, Part 30, market risk, Fundamental Review of Trading Book (FRTB), counterparty credit, liquidity, stress testing, collateral management, Basel (III/IV), RWA reporting requirements, credit and distribution risk, loan originations and syndication, portfolio management, allowance for loan and lease losses (ALLL); current expected credit loss (CECL) and capital models and measurements.
  • Expertise and knowledge of project management methodology/SDLC/Agile, etc., processes in IT or financial services environments and data governance tools such as Collibra.
  • Data analysis skills with the capability of identifying data quality issues, risks, root causes, and correlating those issues with data specifications, rules, and offer/facilitate recommendation for remediation plan solutions.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate information to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Possesses a results-oriented attitude and can lead in an independent and collaborative manner.
  • Team-oriented player with excellent listening, interpersonal, and written communication skills. Ability to work in a cross-functional, fast-paced Risk and Finance environment.
