Job Summary

SpaceX is seeking a highly skilled Materials Technician to join our team at Starbase. As a Materials Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting the development of our launch vehicles and spacecraft by performing various mechanical tests and characterizing materials.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform Mechanical Testing: Conduct standardized mechanical tests, including tensile, compression, fatigue, and fracture toughness, at cryogenic, room, and elevated temperatures to support the building and development of our launch vehicles and spacecraft.
  • Operate Testing Equipment: Use mechanical testing software, data collection, and data report generation to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • Collaborate with Engineering: Work with engineering teams to execute non-standard testing to support launch vehicle and spacecraft hardware design and production.
  • Test Article Fabrication: Fabricate test articles using machining, welding, bonding, polishing, and fixturing techniques.
  • Material Characterization: Characterize materials and welds through sample preparation and executing testing procedures using equipment such as microscopes, sectioning and polishing equipment, SEM/EDS FTIR, and other miscellaneous tools.
  • Maintenance and Calibration: Ensure all test equipment and measurement tool calibration is scheduled and performed.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze data and report results to engineering teams.
  • Work Environment: Maintain a clean and organized work station and ensure a safe working environment.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: 1+ years of experience in materials testing, machining, layup, bonding, or assembly of composites, or hands-on experience in a laboratory setting.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Manufacturing Experience: Experience with manufacturing mechanical test coupons using methods such as milling, electrical discharge machining (EDM), and waterjet.
  • Material Characterization: Experience using material characterization equipment such as a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), or metallography tools.
  • ASTM Test Methods: Understanding of ASTM test methods tensile, fatigue, and fracture toughness testing fundamentals.
  • Data Processing: Experience in post-test data processing and understanding good vs bad data in results.
  • Welding and Metal Fabrication: Experience with welding and metal fabrication.
  • Non-Destructive Testing: Experience with Non-Destructive Testing/Inspection.
  • Engineering Drawings: Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Strain Gage Installation: Knowledge/experience of strain gage installation.
  • Safe Work Practices: Understanding of safe work practices in a lab environment with furnaces, saws, solvents, acids/bases, and other chemicals.
Additional Requirements
  • Availability: Able to work off-shifts and available for overtime and weekends if needed with minimal notice.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Able to wear appropriate PPE for mechanical testing and machine shop environment.
  • Physical Demands: Able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs. unassisted and perform tasks that require standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying.
