Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Ophthalmic Assistant to join our team at Houston Methodist. As an Ophthalmic Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to our ophthalmology department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide personalized care and service to patients, including obtaining medical and personal data, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting with diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Screen patients for conditions, examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye, and note variations from normal for physician review.
  • Arrange for laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, inpatient and outpatient studies, and patient admissions and surgery as requested by the physician.
  • Measure acuity of patients, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision, and obtain optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems.
  • Report observations, conditions, and problems of patients to the physician and/or nurse, and provide for the privacy of patients and families, keeping the safety of the patient in mind.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent education.
  • Two years of experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant.
  • COA - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (IJCAHPO) or COT - Certified Ophthalmic Technician (IJCAHPO) within 1 year.
