Job Summary

Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a highly skilled Ophthalmic Technician to join our team. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a critical role in supporting ophthalmologists and optometrists in the clinical environment. Your primary responsibilities will include performing various diagnostic tests and assessments, triaging patient messages, and assisting with in-clinic procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain thorough medical histories from patients
  • Assess patients' visual acuity, both near and far vision
  • Perform manual lensometry on patients' glasses
  • Assess patients' refractive error by performing a manifest refraction
  • Assess patients' intraocular pressure by performing Goldmann tonometry
  • Assess patients for pupillary defects
  • Assess patients' color vision
  • Assess patients' visual field with confrontation testing
  • Assess patients' extraocular muscle functioning
  • Assess patients' angles to ensure safe dilation
  • Respond to patient messages in a timely manner
  • Assist with emergent/urgent patient scheduling
  • Prepare pre-operative paperwork and assessments
  • Ensure exam rooms are stocked and cleaned
  • Attend Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses to maintain and enhance ophthalmic technician skills
Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Two years of relevant experience
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician (COMT) through JCAHPO
