Position Overview:

We are in search of a talented and versatile Lead Technical Artist (Environment) who possesses a strong enthusiasm for game development, a sharp problem-solving ability, and a commitment to enhancing processes and workflows. This role serves as a vital link between artistic vision and technological execution, representing a dedicated team of technical artists while collaborating closely with programmers, designers, and artists. The objective is to facilitate the construction and maintenance of world-building and content pipelines, ensuring the seamless transition of assets from initial creation to final runtime.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer mentorship and guidance to technical artists at various experience levels.
  • Conduct evaluations and deliver constructive feedback to foster professional growth among team members.
  • Work in partnership with Engineering, Design, and Art teams to devise practical and effective solutions for creating high-quality game environments.
  • Act as the primary stakeholder for the discipline, and when necessary, contribute individually to prototype, implement, or adopt new features that align with both technical specifications and artistic goals.
  • Assist in level creation within the engine and guide the team in developing tools and automation to enhance production efficiency.
  • Address content authoring challenges faced by artists and implement pipeline safeguards to reduce future issues.
  • Investigate, assess, and integrate new engine features into the production workflow as they become available.
  • Ensure the team produces clear, maintainable code that adheres to established coding standards within the studio's code library.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive tools and workflow documentation.
  • Maintain effective communication with production, providing timely updates on task progress and any unforeseen issues that may affect scheduling.
  • Identify performance issues and bottlenecks in the game and assist in optimizing art content.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Required: A minimum of 6 years of professional experience in game development as an environment technical artist or pipeline technical director.
  • Required: Expertise in Unreal Engine, both as a power user and developer (Blueprint & C++), particularly in world-building and level design.
  • Required: Strong proficiency in Python, especially in the development of tools and user interfaces (e.g., PyQt).
  • Required: Experience in runtime profiling and optimization, with a solid understanding of best practices for resource efficiency.
  • Required: In-depth knowledge of asset creation workflows across various digital content creation tools (e.g., Maya, Blender, Substance, Houdini, ZBrush).
  • Preferred: Experience in procedural content generation workflows.
  • Preferred: Proven track record of shipping at least one title using Unreal Engine.
  • Preferred: Previous experience in team leadership or management roles.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with photogrammetry and scanned assets.
  • Bonus: Experience in shader writing and Maya API/plugin development.

Desired Qualities:

  • A demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks effectively in a dynamic development environment.
  • Patience and empathy towards team members, with a focus on their professional development.
  • Self-driven and capable of independently finding solutions.
  • Ability to swiftly adapt to changing tasks to address urgent production challenges.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A collaborative spirit, open to peer feedback and teamwork.
  • Quick learner, able to incorporate new features and techniques into existing workflows.
  • A keen interest in improving artists' experiences and streamlining processes, with a focus on workflow enhancements.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, ensuring consistent delivery of high-quality results.

Note: This position may offer additional incentive compensation, including equity and profit sharing, based on various factors such as industry benchmarks, experience, and specific skills.
