POSITION SUMMARY

The Quality Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring superior quality standards throughout the manufacturing process. This operational position is tasked with inspecting incoming raw materials, monitoring in-process materials, documenting the batching and mixing procedures, and verifying the final product's quality before it is dispatched to customers. Collaboration with various departments is essential to address and resolve quality-related challenges.


Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough inspections on products and production workflows.
  • Implement both manual and automated quality assessments.
  • Maintain precise records of any quality issues encountered.
  • Identify quality concerns and develop actionable solutions.
  • Adhere to Astec's stringent quality standards.

Essential Duties
  • Act as a quality technical consultant for each manufacturing area and field service teams.
  • Collaborate with product teams to analyze systemic quality issues and assist in root cause investigations and corrective actions.
  • Review work orders and associated supplements to ensure compliance with manufacturing specifications.
  • Execute inspection protocols to confirm adherence to industry and Astec quality benchmarks.
  • Perform inspections at various stages: Receiving, In-Process, Final, and Functional.
  • Work closely with Fitters/Welders to identify and address drawing or process modifications that impact product quality.
  • Identify and recommend improvements based on task lists.
  • Update the quality tracking chart daily.
  • Support Product, Manufacturing, and Quality Engineers as a primary responder to quality issues.
  • Prepare quality documentation and reports by gathering, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends related to quality failures, stability studies, recalls, corrective actions, and re-validations.
  • Maintain a clean workspace by applying 6S principles to minimize safety hazards.
  • Ensure a safe working environment by adhering to all company safety protocols, including OSHA guidelines.
  • Participate in weekly safety meetings.
  • Analyze histogram data to help the team identify key issues affecting performance metrics.
  • Update controlled documents as necessary.
  • Enhance quality performance metrics and maintain quality records, including first pass yield.
  • Track significant changes in products, documents, and processes that may impact quality.
  • Conduct audits of employees, work centers, and individual pieces as required.
  • Perform process audits to ensure compliance with specifications.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED, or a combination of education and experience deemed sufficient by management.
  • Associate's degree from a two-year college or a similar technical qualification is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Certification as a Quality Technician (ASQ) or other relevant professional certifications is desirable.
  • 4-6 years of experience as a Quality Technician in a heavy manufacturing environment; mechanical knowledge in hydraulics, diesel engines, or electronics is beneficial.
  • 1-3 years of experience with ISO or similar quality inspection processes.
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships through effective communication with diverse individuals, including customers, vendors, and colleagues.
  • Consistent application of established policies and procedures with professionalism and tact.
  • Proficient in maintaining efficiency and accuracy to meet production demands.
  • Quick learner with adaptability to fast-paced environments and changing circumstances.
  • Experience in documenting processes and attention to detail is preferred.
  • Able to follow verbal instructions, written procedures, or engineering specifications accurately.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact across all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making during inspections to address quality concerns effectively.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The role is situated in a manufacturing environment, where exposure to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools, and equipment is common. Employees may encounter vibrations, fumes, airborne particles, and outside weather conditions, along with the risk of electric shock. The workspace may also involve exposure to varying levels of dirt, dust, and chemicals, with temperature fluctuations. Noise levels can be high, typical of an industrial assembly facility, necessitating hearing protection.
