The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing military medicine. HJF's administrative and support capabilities empower military medical researchers and clinicians to concentrate on their scientific endeavors and achieve their research objectives. HJF is currently seeking a Laboratory Research Associate II to engage in research and/or development in partnership with colleagues on various projects. The Laboratory Research Associate will provide laboratory and technical assistance to senior professionals and address standard complexity challenges in executing research projects within a clinical or laboratory setting. We are in search of a motivated Laboratory Research Associate to become part of our team. Candidates must possess the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with team members and other researchers within the institute, conduct specialized laboratory research utilizing in vitro cells and in vivo animal models. Responsibilities include conducting research and/or development in collaboration with others on projects, providing laboratory and technical support to senior staff, generating and summarizing preliminary data to aid the principal investigator in grant applications, presentations at scientific conferences, and publications in peer-reviewed journals. This role will support the Radiation Countermeasure Program at the Scientific Research Department at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute / Uniformed Services University.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct laboratory research projects utilizing animal models and mammalian cells, including data collection, analysis, and organization. Document detailed observations of experiments.
  • Provide data analysis and interpretation.
  • Collaborate with other technicians on animal experiments, including tracking clinical observations, motility, body weight, and daily data recording.
  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, inventories, and logbooks.
  • Establish and manage databases for research projects.
  • Ensure compliance with established laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
  • Oversee the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
  • Implement quality control measures as required by the protocol and provide basic data analysis.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, publications, and presentations.
  • Adhere to instructions and standard operating procedures to complete assigned tasks. May provide basic training to other laboratory staff.
  • May undertake additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor, including participation in required training.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with standard laboratory techniques.
  • Ability to follow general instructions.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated research expertise in cell and molecular biology techniques, including DNA and RNA extraction and purification, and molecular analysis of specific DNA, RNA, and/or micro-RNA transcripts via quantitative PCR and reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR).
  • Experience with Southern and Northern blotting, mammalian cell culture, clonogenicity assays, protein purification, and antibody-based protein detection methods such as Western blotting, cytokine arrays, ELISA, immunofluorescence staining, and immunoprecipitation.
  • Experience in animal handling, including injections, blood, and tissue collection.
  • Proficient in utilizing public medical research databases and programs, maintaining detailed documentation of research projects.
Physical Capabilities:
  • Lifting: Ability to lift materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for extended periods.
Work Environment:
  • This position will primarily take place in a laboratory setting.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Scientific Discipline is required.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience is required.
