HJF is looking for a Genomics Research Associate to assist in data gathering through conducting research interviews. The Research Associate will provide laboratory and technical assistance to senior staff and address less complex challenges while executing research projects in a laboratory setting. This role is the first of four levels within the Research Assistant series and will support the BioInstrumentation Center (BIC) at Uniformed Services University.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver exceptional products, services, and training to users of the genomics facility. Offer expertise in genomics, genetic analysis, and gene expression, including DNA/RNA sample preparation, quality control, nucleic acid sequencing, qPCR, and data analysis. Operate and maintain genomics facility instruments, ensuring reliable results through proper calibration and reagent selection.
  • Manage the collection of biohazardous and chemical waste, coordinating with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) for safe disposal. Conduct inspections of the genomics facility and recommend actions for compliance with regulations.
  • Schedule instrument usage and oversee billing for products, services, and training. Maintain laboratory supply inventories and monitor expenditures.
  • Assist users in developing experimental protocols, aid in data preparation for publication, recommend corrective actions for insufficient results, and maintain comprehensive records of experimental data and outcomes. Stay updated on advancements in genomics and participate in training sessions to enhance skills.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor, which may include attending required training sessions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of molecular genetics, genomics, and biochemistry principles, typically acquired through a bachelor’s degree.
  • Technical proficiency in laboratory techniques related to molecular genetics, genomics, and biochemistry, along with experience in research data acquisition and analysis.
  • Ability to utilize standard software programs (databases, spreadsheets, word processing) and advanced scientific software applications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey scientific principles and technical requirements effectively.
  • Knowledge of scheduling, billing, purchasing, and budgeting processes to optimize productivity.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including listening, negotiating, and advising users, with the ability to facilitate smooth interactions.
  • Awareness of safety precautions for handling biological and chemical hazards.

Work Environment:
  • This position primarily takes place in a laboratory setting.

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience.
