The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research operates as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) dedicated to addressing critical challenges in biomedical sciences, particularly in cancer and infectious diseases.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Within the Clinical Research Directorate, the laboratory offers clinical oversight for programs at the forefront of research. The quality assurance initiatives ensure the necessary autonomy and transparency in Good Manufacturing Practice operations. The Directorate also provides operational support for clinical research, encompassing clinical trials management, regulatory compliance, pharmacovigilance, and protocol development. These services include dedicated clinical research professionals who deliver patient care to participants at the NIH Clinical Center and support various domestic and international clinical research initiatives. The Directorate's mission is to assist researchers in delivering high-quality clinical research while adhering to applicable regulations and guidelines, maintaining data integrity, and protecting human subjects.

CRD plays a vital role in facilitating NIH-sponsored clinical trials that explore the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of various health challenges, including cancer, infectious diseases, and emerging health threats.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Deliver inpatient and outpatient consultative care for patients undergoing Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT).
  • Provide consultative care for patients with Primary Immunodeficiencies, oncology cases, and those with Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEI).
  • Educate and mentor trainees at various levels within the Transplant and IEI service.
  • Oversee a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care for patients with IEI.
  • Engage in the multidisciplinary management of HSCT, including pre-transplant evaluations and post-transplant care.
  • Document patient interactions through progress notes and communication with referring physicians in compliance with medical record requirements.
  • Participate in clinical rounds and conferences to discuss patient care.
  • Administer and adjust trial medications under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
  • Provide clear discharge instructions and follow up on consulting service recommendations.
  • Conduct and interpret basic laboratory diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Perform comprehensive health assessments, including obtaining medical histories and conducting physical examinations.
  • Carry out minor surgical procedures as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records.
  • Order medications and diagnostic tests as needed.
  • Evaluate clinical findings and determine the need for further assessment.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans, including patient and family education.
  • Regularly assess and modify care plans based on patient progress.
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic health issues, ensuring appropriate therapeutic measures are taken.
  • Assist in extensive clinical trials aimed at developing innovative therapies.
  • Attend patient care rounds and educational sessions as part of the clinical team.
  • Interpret and document diagnostic tests related to clinical trial interventions.
  • Ensure that complex cases are referred to appropriate physicians or administrative supervisors.
  • Independently evaluate patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Document and monitor side effects related to study interventions.
  • Communicate care management plans to all relevant team members.
  • Coordinate all activities with a government attending physician.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
  • M.D. or D.O. with an active, unrestricted medical license in the United States.
  • Board certification in Internal Medicine and Allergy and Immunology or Infectious Diseases.
  • Eligibility for credentialing to practice as a physician in the NIH Clinical Center.
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience.
  • Prior experience in clinical trials management.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with the following skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Experience in Primary Immune Deficiency.
  • Background in Infectious Diseases.
  • Experience in Transplant Infectious Disease.
