The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Veterinary Associate will be responsible for providing technical assistance to the Veterinarians:

Clinical observation and treatment of animals and quality assurance of animal care and use
Performing a variety of technical procedures involving animals including basic animal handling, surgery, injections, gavage, and bleeding techniques in multiple species
Performing post-approval monitoring
Maintaining essential drugs and supply inventory
Maintenance of anesthesia equipment
Developing new or evaluating and modifying existing standard operation procedures
Conducting or participation in training programs for animal husbandry, technical and scientific staff
Participation in ACUC facility inspections
Interfacing and communicating regularly with facility technical, veterinary and lead scientific personnel regarding animal health issues
Management of individual or group AALAS certification classes and examinations
SOP and technical training of investigative and LASP staff
Work schedule may include weekend and holiday hours including a rotating on-call schedule

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

Possession of Bachelor's degree in a field related to biomedical research or laboratory animal science from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
No work experience required with a Bachelors degree
Extensive experience in laboratory animal science techniques related to animal-based research including sterile procedures, safety procedures, anesthesia and analgesia administration, and euthanasia techniques
Knowledge of applicable policies, guidelines and regulations that govern the care, use and welfare of animals in biomedical research.
Ability to function independently in an animal facility and exercise judgment in evaluating animal health issues
Ability to perform quality assurance of technical procedures and husbandry issues
Ability to maintain accurate records
Ability to utilize database and websites to track training and health records
Ability to handle laboratory animals
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

Four (4) years of related biomedical or laboratory animal science experience required
Ability to multi-task
Excellent observational, interpersonal, organizational skills
