Summary

The Fleet Management Division is in search of a Shop Manager to oversee a team of dedicated professionals in a fast-paced setting. The fleet includes, but is not limited to, light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles; police and fire assets; solid waste collection trucks; and construction machinery utilized throughout Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee all facets of shop operations to guarantee effective service delivery. Ensure the provision of high-quality customer service consistently. Advise departmental liaisons on technical matters related to vehicles and equipment; collaborate with departments and/or vendors to resolve issues. Assist in formulating fleet policies and procedures. Supervise, recruit, assess, develop, and manage the performance of assigned personnel. Lead staff responsible for various components of fleet service delivery to City and County departments. Analyze data pertaining to equipment repairs, maintenance, and overall shop performance. Prepare reports and present information to leadership, customers, and employees. Monitor and manage expenditures related to shop and departmental maintenance budgets to ensure service delivery costs remain within scope. Maintain a safe working environment for all assigned personnel.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong leadership capabilities with the ability to motivate and inspire a team. Excellent customer service skills focused on delivering exceptional experiences. Understanding and implementation of Fleet Management principles and practices. Familiarity with Fleet Management Information Systems. Ability to work independently without direct supervision. Knowledge of methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment. Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the trade. Capability to resolve customer complaints related to vehicle repairs and service delivery. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license and the ability to maintain a City driving permit. Required participation in an on-call rotation. Proficiency in working within an electronic accounting/budget platform. Demonstrated conflict management skills with staff and customers. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and customers. Prepare and analyze reports to ensure efficiency and productivity goals are achieved.

Preferred Qualification

Degree or certification from an accredited technical school or college. Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE, or relevant ASE certifications. Minimum of five years of experience leading a fleet shop operation.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma/GED with seven (7) years of relevant work experience; or an Associate's Degree and five (5) years or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.

Salary

$68,082 - $85,103, commensurate with experience.

Conditions of Employment

The City's Background Check Policy mandates background checks for final internal or external candidates applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The information collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to, reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must comply with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must align with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate's written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check, or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
