Summary
The Fleet Management Division is in search of a Shop Manager to oversee a dedicated team in a high-energy environment. The fleet encompasses a variety of assets, including light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, as well as police and fire apparatus, solid waste trucks, and construction machinery utilized throughout the City and Mecklenburg County.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all facets of shop operations to guarantee effective service delivery.
- Ensure exceptional customer service is consistently provided.
- Advise departmental contacts on technical matters concerning vehicles and equipment; collaborate with departments and/or vendors to resolve issues.
- Assist in formulating fleet policies and procedures.
- Supervise, recruit, assess, develop, and manage the performance of assigned personnel.
- Lead staff responsible for various elements of fleet service delivery to City and County departments.
- Analyze data related to equipment repairs, maintenance, and overall shop performance.
- Prepare reports and present findings to leadership, customers, and staff.
- Monitor and manage expenditures related to shop and departmental maintenance budgets to ensure service delivery costs remain within budget.
- Maintain a safe working environment for all assigned personnel.

- Understanding and implementation of Fleet Management principles and practices.
- Familiarity with Fleet Management Information Systems.

- Knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment.
- Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the trade.
- Ability to address customer complaints regarding vehicle repairs and service delivery.
- Follow both oral and written instructions effectively.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license and maintain a City driving permit.
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation.
- Proficient in utilizing an electronic accounting/budget platform.
- Demonstrate effective conflict resolution skills with staff and customers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Establish and maintain productive working relationships with employees, vendors, and customers.
- Prepare and analyze reports to ensure efficiency and productivity objectives are met.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or certification from an accredited technical institution or college.
- Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE, or relevant ASE certifications.
- A minimum of five years of experience managing a fleet shop operation.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED with seven (7) years of relevant work experience; or an Associate's Degree and five (5) years of equivalent education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively perform the essential job duties.
Salary
- $68,082 - $85,103, commensurate with experience.
Conditions of Employment
The City's Background Check Policy mandates that background checks be conducted on final candidates applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. This includes reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record checks, and, if applicable, credit history checks, sex offender registry checks, and motor vehicle records checks.
Background checks must comply with all federal and state statutes, including the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Candidates must provide written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check, or credit report, and information derived from such reports must be properly stored and disposed of.
Final candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be required to complete a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
