Summary

The Fleet Management Division is in search of a Shop Manager to oversee a team of dedicated professionals in a dynamic environment. The fleet includes a diverse range of assets such as light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles; police and fire apparatus; solid waste collection trucks; and construction machinery utilized throughout Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee all facets of shop operations to guarantee effective service delivery. Ensure exceptional customer service is consistently provided. Advise departmental liaisons on technical matters related to vehicles and equipment; collaborate with departments and/or vendors to address issues. Assist in formulating fleet policies and procedures. Supervise, recruit, assess, develop, and manage the performance of assigned personnel. Lead staff responsible for various elements of fleet service delivery to City and County departments. Analyze data pertaining to equipment repairs, maintenance, and overall shop performance. Prepare reports and present findings to leadership, customers, and staff. Monitor and manage expenditures related to shop and departmental maintenance budgets to ensure service delivery costs remain within parameters. Maintain a safe working environment for all assigned personnel.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong leadership capabilities with the ability to motivate and inspire a team. Excellent customer service aptitude focused on delivering outstanding experiences. Understand and apply principles and practices of Fleet Management. Familiarity with Fleet Management Information Systems. Ability to work independently without direct supervision. Knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment. Awareness of occupational hazards and safety measures pertinent to the trade. Ability to resolve customer grievances related to vehicle repairs and service delivery. Follow both oral and written instructions effectively. Communicate proficiently both orally and in writing. Possess a valid North Carolina driver's license and maintain a City driving permit. Required to participate in an on-call rotation. Ability to operate within an electronic accounting/budgeting platform. Demonstrate effective conflict resolution skills with staff and customers. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Establish and maintain productive working relationships with employees, vendors, and customers. Prepare and analyze reports to ensure efficiency and productivity objectives are achieved.

Preferred Qualification

Degree or certification from an accredited technical institution or college. Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE, or relevant ASE certifications. A minimum of five years of experience in leading a fleet shop operation.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma/GED with seven (7) years of relevant work experience; or an Associate's Degree and five (5) years of equivalent education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties.

Salary

$68,082 - $85,103, commensurate with experience.

Conditions of Employment

The City's Background Check Policy mandates that background checks be conducted on final internal or external candidates applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The information collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must comply with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must adhere to the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate's written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check, or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be required to complete a skills assessment and/or participate in other evaluations.
