What is the Role?


The Agile Release Train Leader's (ARTL) primary responsibility is to facilitate Agile Release Trains (ART) by guiding them towards success and managing the intricacies of delivering software consistently in expansive environments.

The ARTL's emphasis is on delivering value through the management of program-level processes, execution, and ongoing enhancement, as well as overseeing Release Train Feature Roadmaps and planning.

This position will involve mentoring teams to enhance their efficiency in Lean-Agile delivery, with the expectation of coaching their teams.

Facilitates the organized preparation of release planning for the release train

This encompasses:

  • Collaborating with Program Architects to support the Product Manager in prioritizing features for the upcoming quarterly planning cycle.
  • Aiding Program Architects and the Product Manager in refining epics for consideration in the next quarterly planning cycle to meet the Epic Definition of Ready.
  • Supporting the ART in communication and coordination with stakeholders and customers during epic definition and delivery.
  • Ensuring effective communication and coordination for quarterly planning, including feature reviews and story alignment.
  • Managing changes to the ART's quarterly plan and understanding the impacts of those changes.
  • Assisting with the traceability of project epics to application epics/stories, ensuring traceability in JIRA from business requirements to testing scripts.
Transparency of the Release Train

Assists the ART in maintaining transparency for itself, the teams on the train, and the organization through:

o Backlog Management and ALM tool data integrity for accurate reporting.

May involve the collection of metrics, KPIs, investment mix reporting, and other reporting as required by the release train or organization.


o Facilitating and continuously improving periodic ART Reviews with organizational leaders and stakeholders to provide clarity on expected value delivery and to gather stakeholder feedback on necessary changes to the release train's direction.

o May include participation in and aiding in the enhancement of the System Demo

  • Promotes the concept of transparency within their program's teams.
  • Ensures that all program cadences are not only suitable for the program but that all stakeholders (TI, Architects, Delivery Leads, etc.) are included in those cadences.
Coordination of Delivery

  • Guides the ART in coordinating major epic releases and the ongoing delivery of value to customers where multiple teams, release trains, or solution groups are involved in development and release.
  • Directs the ART and Product Managers in coordinating portfolio-level initiatives that span multiple release trains.
  • Leads the ART in resolving or reporting escalated issues involving risk or dependency management that may hinder the team's ability to deliver Epics.
  • Facilitates Risk discussions at the conclusion of a Program Increment (PI) event to ensure
What Qualifications are Required?

4+ Years Experience as a true ARTL in a large enterprise environment
Exceptional interpersonal skills
Experience in PI Planning Independently
Strong background in SAFE as ARTL
SAFe Certification
