Job Title: General Counsel

The Public Interest Network is seeking a highly skilled and experienced General Counsel to lead our in-house legal department. As a key member of our leadership team, you will provide strategic legal guidance and support to our organizations and staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct the legal department and develop plans and priorities for the team.
  • Provide corporate and tax compliance advice and ensure good standing with federal and state regulators.
  • Advise on employment and labor matters, including benefits systems.
  • Lead on election law and campaign finance matters, including advising on non-partisan voter registration drives and tracking and reporting to FEC and state agencies.
  • Represent our organizations' rights to conduct door-to-door and street canvassing.
  • Draft and review contracts, leases, grant agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Manage risk and develop policies to reduce liability risk.
  • Lead a team of Assistant and Associate General Counsel, an administrator, and interns or fellows.
Qualifications:
  • A J.D. degree is required.
  • 8-16 years of legal experience, preferably in one or more of the practice areas mentioned above.
  • Excellent academic credentials and a strong commitment to nonprofit and political work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, research, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in diverse legal subject areas.
  • Strong leadership, congeniality, and creativity to drive and motivate others.
  • Outstanding work ethic and ability to drive organizational change.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of The Public Interest Network and its member organizations to effect grassroots social change.

Compensation and Benefits:

The starting compensation range for this position is $75,000-$105,000, depending on relevant experience and education. The Public Interest Network offers an excellent benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, commuter benefit program, 401(k) plan with employer match, parental leave, long-term disability insurance, and may include needs-based student loan assistance.
