POSITION: Catering Captain

REPORTS TO: Catering Supervisor & Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Catering Captain plays a pivotal role in orchestrating events and activities, ensuring the delivery of exceptional catering services for banquets, receptions, and various gatherings. The primary objective is to enhance customer satisfaction and foster loyalty.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following responsibilities are integral to this role. Additional tasks may be assigned as necessary.

  • Overseeing, delegating, and guiding the work of catering staff.
  • Managing labor expenses by adhering to established schedules.
  • Engaging directly with both staff and clients during events to ensure seamless execution.
  • Arriving punctually in appropriate attire as per the schedule.
  • Assisting in the collection of all banquet equipment, including flatware, china, glassware, and serving utensils required for each event.
  • Requesting food and supplies as necessary throughout events.
  • Supporting the preparation and arrangement of event spaces when needed.
  • Participating in pre-event meetings to review event specifics.
  • Adhering to Health Department regulations and standards.
  • Delivering friendly and professional customer service consistently.
  • Remaining at designated stations and fulfilling assigned duties during events.
  • Conducting inventory control, including counting and requisitioning food and supplies before, during, and after events.
  • Disassembling tables and banquet equipment post-event.
  • Cleaning and returning catering equipment and serving items to designated storage areas.
  • Maintaining grooming standards and policies for oneself and team members.
  • Performing additional duties as required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role involves direct supervision of multiple team members within the Catering Department. Responsibilities include planning, conducting walkthroughs, and client meetings; developing event sheets, floor plans, and rental orders; allocating labor resources for events; assigning tasks; addressing complaints; and ensuring smooth event operations while meeting guest and client expectations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To excel in this position, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential duties effectively. The following qualifications are essential:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A minimum of two years of client-facing experience in a service-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with catering services and terminology.
  • Ability to follow instructions and execute tasks efficiently.
  • Possessing a pleasant demeanor and professional appearance.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
  • Motivated, proactive, and hands-on approach.
  • Strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English to effectively communicate with customers and team members.
  • Experience with Excel, Word, Outlook, and Visio is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Attention to detail and consistency in service delivery are crucial. Candidates should possess:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands of this role include:

  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Manual dexterity for handling food service items.
  • Frequent lifting and moving of objects weighing up to 15 lbs, with occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs, and rare lifting of up to 100 lbs (with assistance).

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Employees may experience moderate to high noise levels during events and may be exposed to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures. Vaccination is a job requirement, with accommodations evaluated based on regulations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Food service handler certificate and RBS (ABC) certification are required.

HOURS OF WORK AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Travel to and from event locations is necessary. Shifts may vary, requiring flexibility to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
