POSITION: Catering Captain

REPORTS TO: Catering Supervisor & Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Catering Captain plays a crucial role in the successful execution of events, ensuring that all assigned functions are meticulously organized and delivered with exceptional quality. This position aims to achieve high levels of customer satisfaction and foster client loyalty through outstanding catering services for various events, including banquets and receptions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are essential to the role, though additional responsibilities may be assigned:

  • Oversee the planning, assignment, and direction of work for catering staff.
  • Manage labor costs by adhering to established schedules.
  • Engage actively with both staff and clients during events to ensure smooth operations.
  • Arrive on time and in the appropriate uniform as per the schedule.
  • Assist in gathering all necessary banquet equipment, including flatware, china, glassware, and serving items.
  • Order food and supplies as required during events.
  • Support the preparation and setup of event spaces when necessary.
  • Participate in pre-event meetings to review event details.
  • Adhere to Health Department regulations and standards.
  • Deliver friendly and professional customer service consistently.
  • Remain at designated stations and fulfill assigned duties throughout events.
  • Conduct inventory control, including counting and requisitioning food and supplies before, during, and after events.
  • Assist in breaking down tables and catering equipment post-event.
  • Ensure that catering equipment and serving items are cleaned and returned to their designated storage areas.
  • Maintain grooming standards and adhere to company policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and necessary.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This role involves direct supervision of multiple team members within the Catering Department. Responsibilities include:

  • Acting as the supervisor on duty for specific events, which encompasses planning, conducting walk-throughs, and meeting with clients.
  • Developing event sheets, floor plans, and managing rental orders.
  • Allocating labor resources for events and directing staff accordingly.
  • Addressing client complaints and resolving issues in collaboration with department leadership and Human Resources.
  • Ensuring that all event activities run smoothly and meet guest expectations.
  • Communicating any event-related or employee issues with the Catering Supervisor or Manager, along with conducting post-event follow-ups.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To excel in this position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in a client-facing service environment.
  • Familiarity with catering services and terminology.
  • Ability to follow directions and perform tasks effectively.
  • Possess a pleasant demeanor and maintain a neat appearance.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
  • Exhibit motivation, proactivity, and hands-on engagement.
  • Strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English to communicate effectively with customers and colleagues.
  • Experience with Excel, Word, Outlook, and Visio is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands of this role include:

  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Manual dexterity for handling food service items.
  • Frequent lifting and moving of objects weighing up to 15 lbs, with occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs, and rare lifting of up to 100 lbs (with assistance).

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work may involve:

  • Moderate to high exposure to noise during events.
  • Potential exposure to vibrations and strobe lights during events.
  • Working indoors and outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Compliance with vaccination requirements, with accommodations evaluated as necessary.
  • Possession of a Food Service Handler Certificate and RBS (ABC) certification is required.

HOURS OF WORK AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Travel to and from event locations is necessary. Shifts may vary, requiring flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
