Job Summary

Memphis Shelby County Schools is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Family Engagement Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating, planning, and implementing support programs and services to ensure the academic and social success of students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Teachers and Staff: Work closely with teachers, staff, counselors, and parents/guardians to assist students and families in achieving optimal academic and social success.
  • Advocate for Students and Families: Serve as an advocate for students and families, and as a liaison between families and appropriate agencies that can provide services to those in need of additional assistance.
  • Assess and Referral: Assess the need for professional intervention services, including psychological, social, or medical services, and make the appropriate referrals.
  • Community Resource Development: Seek and secure available resources within the community that will meet the needs of students and families.
  • Parent Participation Evaluation: Assist District administrators in evaluating the effectiveness of increasing parent participation and identify barriers to parent participation, such as low income, disabilities, limited literacy, language, cultural, or ethnic considerations.
  • Program Planning and Implementation: Plan, coordinate, and implement programs and services for parents and students designed to support Title I and No Child Left Behind (NCLB) initiatives.
  • Training and Workshops: Plan and present meetings, training, and workshops for parents to inform them of Title I/NCLB goals and objectives, policies and procedures, programs and services.
  • Financial Management: Monitor budget expenditures and prepare related reports as required.
  • Resource Provision: Provide parents with resources to help them better meet the educational and social needs of students, including assessing the need for professional intervention services and making appropriate referrals.
  • Counseling and Support: Counsel students and parents in coping with everyday living, maintaining healthy lifestyles, and developing positive relationship skills.
  • Parent Engagement: Help parents become more engaged in the academic and social education of their children, and provide information to parents about their children's classes, standardized test requirements, school-related activities, and opportunities.
  • Volunteer Coordination: Identify opportunities for and encourage parents' participation as volunteers at their children's school(s).
  • Community Outreach: Seek and secure commitments of community support and resources for parents, and promote programs through presentations and the preparation and dissemination of informational fliers and other materials.
  • Student Tracking: Track and document student grades and attendance, and report unexcused absences and grade failures to parents.
  • Evaluation and Reporting: Conduct surveys and interviews program participants to evaluate effectiveness, and prepare and submit accurate and complete documentation of all assigned cases.
  • Administrative Support: Receive and respond to inquiries, concerns, and complaints in areas of responsibility, and perform routine administrative/office tasks as required.
  • Professional Development: Attend training, conferences, and workshops as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree or equivalent and One (1) year of related experience.
