Automation Engineering Expert

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct comprehensive technical tasks in the management, development, and execution of electrical systems, instrumentation, automation, reporting, and security measures. Collaborate with the engineering team to devise automation systems and processes aimed at enhancing production efficiency. Partner with Lead Operators and Engineers to ensure system reliability and facilitate information flow.



OVERVIEW:

  • Oversee project management, development, and execution of all automation-related initiatives concerning company-managed assets.
  • Collaborate with management, production, and engineering teams to design automation systems and processes that boost production efficiency, safety, and security.
  • Perform technical tasks in project management, development, and execution of electrical systems, instrumentation, automation, reporting, and security.
  • Work alongside lead operators and engineers to sustain system uptime and provide essential information.
  • Direct activities for a team of Instrumentation & Electrical technicians, electricians, and contractors on a daily and project basis.
  • Evaluate systems and establish standards for automation, programming, instrumentation, and security.
  • Create standards and maintain project documentation, including commissioning and operational procedures.
  • Incorporate training courses to assist in the certification process and uphold necessary active certifications.
  • Implement industrial control logic, plan control systems, and layout required components, setup, installation, and commissioning of hardware for system control, programming of PLCs, HMI calibration, and troubleshooting of process instruments, PLC, and Wonderware issues, including PID tuning, while conveying information to facility operators for clarity.
  • Configure and sustain data acquisition systems and generate reports as requested by operations, engineering, and management.
  • Maintain SCADA server in both virtual and hardware environments, collaborating closely with the IT department to troubleshoot communication equipment linking facilities and the SCADA environment.
  • Adhere to best practices for automation, instrumentation, and electrical systems. Must be capable of remotely working on online SCADA/PLC systems safely.
  • Travel to and from facilities as necessary. May be required to assist in troubleshooting and repairs of SCADA/PLC systems remotely or locally after hours as needed.
  • Regularly perform backups and maintain secure archives of these repositories appropriately.
  • Proficiently utilize testing instruments, multimeters, HART communicators, and computer-based testing equipment utilized in the Oil & Gas sector.
  • Develop and implement programs for preventive maintenance and recordkeeping.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC Code for automation projects.
  • Interpret P&ID drawings and program according to SAFE charts. Demonstrate the ability to comprehend processes in the oil and gas sectors and program these systems accordingly.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and maintain accurate records.
  • Stay informed of lockout/tagout/EIL policies and procedures.
  • Execute project layout, procure materials, and successfully complete and commission projects.
  • Continue to learn and adapt to new systems as they may be adopted by the company in the future.


PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be qualified under applicable regulations and undergo required fit testing.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment, which may include self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and sitting.
  • Work in confined or restricted environments.
  • Work at elevated heights, in enclosed spaces, and on uneven surfaces.
  • Climb ladders, stairs, and ramps.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including day and night, additional hours, and/or overtime based on operational needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, through sight, hearing, and/or otherwise, to perform assigned tasks and maintain proper job safety conditions.
  • Concentrate and focus to monitor and observe for safety and environmental issues, including hazardous gas leaks and oil spills.
  • Analyze and respond promptly to safety and environmental issues in a sound and timely manner.
  • Obtain and maintain Swing Rope Certification.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Some college education preferred.
  • Experience in the Oil & Gas industry preferred, but not mandatory.
  • 5 to 10+ years of relevant experience in automated control systems.
  • Relevant experience with PLC software and HMI platforms.
