As a Field Underwriter specializing in Commercial Lines, you will oversee a portfolio of business to ensure both profitability and expansion. Your role will involve evaluating new and renewal business, determining coverage risks, generating quotes, and addressing inquiries related to coverage, all within your designated authority. Building strong relationships with agents will be key to enhancing positive business flow. Success in this position requires working with minimal supervision and exercising considerable independent judgment. Depending on the role's requirements and location, this position may offer hybrid or remote work options.

Key Responsibilities

  • Achieve profitable results on less complex niche business through effective risk assessment by:
    • Evaluating, selecting, and pricing business with specific terms and conditions of coverage
    • Reviewing inspection reports, location data, financial metrics, and other relevant tools to identify new or outstanding issues
    • Collaborating with Risk Control for inspections, follow-ups, and service needs for insured clients
    • Implementing corrective actions or remediation strategies for renewal accounts
    • Timely escalation of referrals for accounts requiring additional review or approval from senior underwriters
    • Ensuring compliance with service expectations and regulatory requirements through prompt release of renewals, non-renewals, and conditional notices
  • Responsible for meeting key performance indicators for the portfolio, including:
    • Developing and nurturing successful relationships with distribution partners by:
      • Conducting regular portfolio review discussions
      • Adhering to customer feedback guidelines
      • Occasional travel to partner offices
  • Consistently uphold customer satisfaction standards
  • Coordinate with the distribution team to build a robust pipeline, resolve issues, and manage change effectively
  • Maintain regular communication with portfolio team members regarding the health of assigned agencies and market conditions that may affect the portfolio
Fostering a High-Performance Culture
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and demonstrate strong business acumen
  • Provide mentorship to support staff throughout their career journeys
  • Conduct peer audits and approve underwriting decisions for associates with lower authority levels
  • Assist in training new hires and internal promotions by offering ongoing mentorship and constructive feedback
  • Review and approve referrals for associates at lower authority levels
  • Perform additional related tasks as assigned
Qualifications

Required:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, or a related field preferred
  • Possession or pursuit of an insurance designation preferred (CPCU, IIA, etc.)
  • A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in commercial underwriting, including one to two years in a property and casualty insurance environment
Recommended:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of common terms, practices, processes, and regulations in the property and casualty insurance sector
  • Ability to consistently apply advanced underwriting principles within the field
  • Strong negotiation skills, sound judgment, and reasonableness in analysis and decision-making
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for conveying clear and concise information
  • Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Proficient in Microsoft products, particularly Excel (including pivot tables and vlookups) for strategic analysis
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a high volume of work and meet tight deadlines
Compensation:
  • Salary range of $48,600 - $81,000 based on experience, plus eligibility for bonuses
  • Salary range of $53,400 - $89,000 based on experience in select states, plus eligibility for bonuses
