Position Overview:

We are currently seeking a Medium Voltage Electrical Power Engineer with experience in substation design. This role involves supporting and engaging in the design of substations from the initial concept phase through to the final construction documentation and project completion.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design and engineering of substations from concept through to completion.
  • Conduct Electrical Engineering tasks requiring a solid understanding of utility substation designs and standards.
  • Develop Electrical Design for projects, including Relay Upgrades, Breaker Additions/Upgrades, Transformer Replacements, RTU Installations, and New Substations.
  • Execute Physical Design for projects, such as Bus Additions and new Equipment Installations.
  • Establish project scope definitions, estimates, and timelines.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure timely and budget-compliant project completion.
  • Prepare Specifications and Material Lists.
  • Oversee the preparation of Review Sets and Final Construction Sets.
  • Manage Project Close Out and As-Built revisions.
  • Engage with clients, utility personnel, and manufacturers' representatives as necessary.
  • Stay updated on the latest developments in electric utility substation design and construction.
  • Propose improvements as needed.
  • Serve as the Lead Engineer on assigned projects.
  • Conduct site visits for documentation as required.
  • Inspect construction sites to assess work progress or completion.
  • Mentor and train Design Engineers, Designers, and the Electrical CAD Team.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager of Electrical Engineering or a Senior Protection & Control Engineer.
  • Function as a technical lead in substation design.
  • Substation design will cover distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission level voltage classes.
  • Develop electrical design deliverables, including protection and control design (protective relays) and/or physical design.
  • Actively participate in management, project scheduling, and resource planning meetings.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of experience in the engineering and design of utility-scale substations for power generation, storage, transmission, and distribution projects.
  • Thorough understanding of IEEE substation design standards related to physical aspects.
  • Experience with power system studies, including lightning, auxiliary transformer sizing, and grounding.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited program.
  • P.E. certification is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, 2D and 3D rendering programs, and other analysis software.
