Position Title: Planting Manager (Potatoes)

Location: Bakersfield, CA

Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000 / Year

Role Overview:

The Planting Manager will oversee all aspects of field operations related to planting and scheduling within the potato farming sector. This role requires close collaboration with various team members, including farm managers and variety development specialists.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture is preferred, though equivalent experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in operating and maintaining agricultural machinery, including tractors and planters.
  • Experience with farm labor contractors and staffing agencies is advantageous.
  • Strong mechanical skills and knowledge of planting techniques, farming operations, and potato planting machinery.
  • Familiarity with organizational policies and procedures is essential.
  • Experience with proprietary agricultural software is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of production agriculture practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects effectively to meet business objectives.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal, are required.
  • Willingness to travel up to 70% of the time, including overnight stays in various growing regions.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and physical evaluations is required.

Essential Responsibilities:

The Planting Manager will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating planting schedules in collaboration with the Director of Potato Operations and Farm Managers.
  • Ensuring operational flexibility to meet planting schedules, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Managing planting crews, including supervisors, operators, and drivers.
  • Maintaining accurate time and attendance records for crew members and ensuring timely payroll submissions.
  • Keeping detailed records of potato varieties and seed sources.
  • Communicating updates and issues promptly to the Director of Potato Operations.
  • Adhering to population and quality standards consistently across all regions.
  • Monitoring the performance of labor crews and ensuring quality standards are met.
  • Documenting all planting activities accurately in company data systems.
  • Collaborating with the seed department on varieties, trials, and inventory management.
  • Overseeing equipment maintenance and repairs to ensure optimal performance.
  • Managing crew rotations to enhance talent retention and reduce burnout.
  • Addressing attendance and performance issues within the planting teams.
  • Overseeing field operations and performing general maintenance and repair tasks during non-planting periods.

Physical Demands:

This role requires:

  • The ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the day.
  • Physical capability to operate equipment and perform tasks at ground level.
  • Mobility to navigate uneven terrain while operating machinery.
  • The ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 lbs.
