The Planting Manager will oversee all aspects of field operations related to planting and scheduling within the potato farming sector. This role necessitates close collaboration with various stakeholders, including the potato farming team, variety development experts, and farm management personnel.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture is preferred, though equivalent experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in operating and maintaining agricultural machinery, including tractors and planters.
  • Experience with labor contractors and staffing services is advantageous.
  • Strong mechanical skills and knowledge of planting processes, agricultural operations, and potato planting equipment are essential.
  • Familiarity with organizational policies and procedures is required.
  • Experience with proprietary agricultural software is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of production agriculture practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects effectively to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Leadership and people management skills are necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is preferred.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal, are required.
  • Willingness to travel 70% of the time and stay overnight in various growing regions is mandatory.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are preferred.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and physical evaluations is necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

The Planting Manager will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating planting schedules in collaboration with the Director of Potato Operations and Farm Managers, ensuring adaptability to weather conditions.
  • Managing planting crews, including supervisors, operators, and drivers, while maintaining accurate attendance records for payroll.
  • Keeping detailed records of potato varieties and seed sources.
  • Communicating updates and challenges to the Director of Potato Operations promptly.
  • Ensuring compliance with population and quality standards across all regions.
  • Monitoring the performance of both external labor crews and internal staff.
  • Maintaining comprehensive records of planting activities and accurately entering data into company systems.
  • Collaborating with the seed department regarding varieties, trials, and inventory management.
  • Overseeing equipment maintenance and repairs to guarantee operational reliability.
  • Managing crew rotations to promote talent retention and minimize burnout.
  • Addressing attendance and performance issues within the planting teams.
  • Supervising field operations and performing general maintenance tasks when not engaged in planting activities.

Physical Requirements:

Candidates must be able to:

  • Work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Engage with equipment and products at ground level.
  • Access and operate various types of stationary and moving machinery.
  • Navigate uneven terrain both on foot and while operating equipment.
  • Lift and move items weighing up to 25 lbs.
