Position Overview
The Agricultural Field Technician I (Seasonal) operates under the guidance of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory) and plays a crucial role in initiatives aimed at controlling the spread of Pierce's Disease and the glassy-winged sharpshooter. This position is integral to the Pierce's Disease Control Program within the Department of Food & Agriculture. The successful candidate will be expected to foster effective working relationships, collaborate with team members, work autonomously, follow instructions, and adhere to deadlines.
- Establish and prioritize work schedules for the deployment of insect traps in designated agricultural areas. Utilize a state vehicle for monitoring glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) activity.
- Conduct bi-weekly inspections of insect traps for GWSS and other pests within a specified territory using a state vehicle.
- Employ field survey methodologies in agricultural settings to promptly identify GWSS infestations and activities.
- Identify GWSS and other quarantined pests to recognize potential infestations and coordinate appropriate responses.
- Retrieve and categorize GWSS traps from citrus orchards for further analysis.
- Execute additional responsibilities as assigned to mitigate the spread of GWSS and Pierce's Disease.
- Offer technical support as directed by Supervisors at the PDCP Arvin Field Station.
Work Environment
This position primarily involves outdoor work in agricultural fields and nurseries, subject to varying weather conditions. The incumbent will be responsible for daily inspections of insect traps, operation of a state vehicle, and may work independently. The role entails exposure to diverse temperatures, moisture levels, humidity, and noise while navigating different terrains.
Incumbents may be required to handle pesticides following the restricted-entry interval.
Requirements
The candidate must possess a valid CA Driver's License and maintain a safe driving record to operate a state vehicle. A safe driving record is defined as being free from specific violations within the last two years.
