Our **Sport Research Lab (NSRL)** is a collaborative environment comprising researchers, innovators, and scientists dedicated to enhancing athletic performance through scientific insights. The NSRL thrives on its Research Operations team, which is committed to fostering relationships with athletes and maximizing the lab's physical and digital capabilities.
Located at **our World Headquarters**, the Sport Research Lab within the LeBron James Innovation Center spans 84,000 square feet, providing a space for athletes to engage in play, training, and recovery. We are also expanding our global presence beyond Oregon.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FORWe are in search of a motivated **Lead Engineer** to join our team. This role requires an engineer proficient in both mechanical and electrical systems. Your practical experience with troubleshooting and integrating lab equipment will serve as the foundation for developing strategies to enhance and maintain lab capabilities. A history of self-directed learning and collaborative problem-solving is crucial. Additionally, you will be tasked with researching current industry trends and emerging technologies. Managing large-scale projects, including facilities, construction, and equipment installation, will also be part of your responsibilities.
WHAT YOU WILL WORK ONIn this role, you will oversee multiple concurrent programs, acting as a liaison to specify, design, procure, and install new equipment through both internal and external partners. You will work to understand and interpret program and researcher objectives, translating them into equipment requirements and developing solutions through a collaborative, data-driven approach. After validating and training others on new systems, you will continue to support teams by troubleshooting and upgrading systems in development. Throughout this process, you will leverage functional processes and best practices, identifying improvements that enhance team efficiency.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITHYou will collaborate within a world-class sports research lab, supporting daily research operations. Building relationships and managing our external strategic partners will be essential. Collaborating across functions and establishing new capabilities in innovation requires a system-based mindset and interdisciplinary problem-solving skills. This role also involves the shipping and handling of sensitive equipment and managing lab supply inventory.
WHAT YOU BRING- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
- 7+ years of practical experience in research, manufacturing, design, or innovation.
- A proven track record as a self-directed learner.
- Experience in troubleshooting, designing, procuring, and constructing complex electrical and mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with purchasing custom and commercial capital equipment.
- Experience with data collection systems, including creation, improvement, and calibration.
- A meticulous and methodical approach to problem-solving.
- Strong communication skills to convey complex topics to diverse technical and non-technical audiences.
- Adept at navigating ambiguity and thriving in a dynamic, results-oriented environment.
- Experience in fabricating proof of concept and prototype devices using hand tools, machining, and 3D printing.
- Knowledge of programming microcomputers and microcontrollers (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Arduino) is a plus.
- Proficiency in software programming languages such as Python and/or LabVIEW.
- Experience as a technical lead within a multidisciplinary team, including vendors, integrators, and technicians.
- Ability to document processes and train others on new tools and equipment.
- Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time.
