Clinical Laboratory Specialist

Position Overview:
Under general supervision, the Clinical Laboratory Specialist conducts a variety of testing procedures, including waived, moderate, and high complexity analyses, in accordance with CMS Standards and Certification: Laboratory Requirements (42 CFR 493).
Key Responsibilities:
Quality Assurance
- Executes testing protocols using both manual and automated methods, adhering to established policies and procedures.
- Prepares necessary reagents, quality control materials, and other testing supplies.
- Conducts routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.
- Aids in the evaluation of data and the integration of new instruments and methodologies.
- Maintains knowledge of specimen storage requirements, including open and expiration dates for reagents and quality controls.
- Understands and applies HIPAA regulations to ensure patient confidentiality.
- Inputs comments and utilizes RBV for accurate result reporting.
- Communicates critical values to the appropriate personnel, ensuring full patient identification and test details.
- Assesses patient results and generates reports as needed.
- Identifies and reports computer-related issues to IT or resolves them independently.
- Demonstrates proficiency in documentation processes during system downtimes.
- Reviews shift pending reports and identifies critical patients or those with testing complications.
- Reviews and documents quality control measures and troubleshooting steps.
- Adheres to all protocols, standard operating procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
- Identifies and resolves issues related to testing procedures, patient results, and specimen integrity.
- Ensures accurate identification of specimens by matching patient names and Medical Record Numbers.
- Reviews patient results for accuracy prior to final verification.
- Assists management in the development and review of laboratory policies and procedures.
- Participates in the training of new staff members.
- Contributes to maintaining facility accreditation readiness for regulatory visits.
- Responsible for timely reporting of safety incidents through the designated reporting tool; participates in all safety training programs; performs duties in a safe manner and monitors the work environment for safety concerns.
- Remains informed and compliant with state and federal regulations and company policies relevant to the role.
- Ensures all required certifications and licenses are current and valid.
- Completes all mandatory training modules and job-specific training within the designated timeframe.
Qualifications:
Education:
Associate Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or Biological Science is required.
For Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist roles, a Bachelor's degree in the relevant fields is required.
MLT candidates must be eligible to sit for and pass the MT/MLS ASCP, AMT, or equivalent boards within six months.
Certification:
Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist certification from ASCP, AMT, HEW, or equivalent is required.
New graduates must pass boards for certification within six months.
Experience:
Preferred experience varies by role, with 1-3 years in an acute care setting being advantageous for certain positions.
