Environmental Engineer: Agricultural Waste Management

Job Summary

The State of Kansas is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Engineer to join our team in the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. As a key member of our Bureau of Environmental Field Services, you will play a critical role in the review and approval of plan specifications for the construction or modification of devices, facilities, and systems related to agricultural waste management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough reviews of permit applications for livestock waste management systems, ensuring compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations.
  • Collaborate with KDHE district staff, LWM section staff, consultants, engineers, facility owners, and other stakeholders to gather information and complete reviews.
  • Utilize various informational sources, including well databases, design standards, regional reports, research papers, and water supply data, to inform review decisions.
  • Make onsite visits to livestock waste management facilities as needed to obtain additional information.
  • Participate in all aspects of the Kansas Livestock Waste Management Program's engineering unit, including acting as the lead worker and assisting in the training of new LWM section engineers.
  • Assist in the development and oversight of a system for prioritizing and tracking permit applications for the modification of existing confined feeding facilities or the construction of new facilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Engineer in Training or Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate recognized by the Board of Technical Professions (for Engineering Associate Position).
  • Professional engineering license recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions (for Professional Engineer Position).
  • Preferred qualifications include experience in the design and/or review of livestock waste management systems, ArcGIS, soil engineering, and proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
