Job Description:
Are you skilled in the installation and repair of sophisticated technology? The Aeronautics Division at the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is on the lookout for an Aviation Electronics Specialist who is passionate, driven, and self-motivated, with a keen interest in aviation.

We seek individuals with a strong aptitude for installing and maintaining intricate electronic systems essential for aviation navigation and meteorological reporting.

This role is fulfilling and involves working with communication systems, computers, navigational aids, visual devices, and various electronic apparatus both on and off airports within the National Air Space System.

If unable to fill at the Electronic Specialist Senior/Aviation Aids level, NDOT will consider applicants at the Electronic Specialist/Aviation Aids level.

Job Duties:
Utilize schematic diagrams, blueprint drawings, maintenance manuals, and factory publications to operate, modify, test, and repair complex electronic equipment necessary for aviation navigation and weather reporting systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Construction, installation, preventive maintenance inspection, analysis of meter readings, troubleshooting, and repair or replacement of malfunctioning components or equipment.
  • Possessing knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic devices, and computer hardware and software applications.

Receive training on and study the navigational aids listed below to obtain and maintain certifications required for installation, maintenance, and repair:

  • VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range [VOR]
  • Nondirectional Radio Beacon [NDB]
  • Distance Measuring Equipment [DME]
  • Automated Weather Observation Systems [AWOS]

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Electronic Specialist/Aviation Aids:
Associate's degree from a vocational-technical program in electronics or two years of related experience. A General Radiotelephone Operator License (PG) issued by the Federal Communications Commission is required within three months of employment.

Electronic Specialist Senior/Aviation Aids:
Associate's degree from a vocational-technical program in electronics and relevant experience with navigational aid equipment. Additional years of experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a General Radiotelephone Operator License (PG) issued by the Federal Communications Commission and FAA letter of verification for Automated Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Five years of experience in electronics, a solid understanding of math and algebra, and an FCC General Radio Telephone operator's license.

Other Requirements:
Applicants without the FCC license may be considered, but must acquire the license within three months of employment. A valid driver's license is required, and overnight travel multiple times a month is necessary. Regular and reliable attendance is also essential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
Tools, materials, methods, and practices of electronic repair and construction; circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic devices, and computer hardware and software applications; FCC rules and regulations; air navigation principles; electronic principles and theory.

Skills in:
Establishing work priorities; repairing and constructing electronic circuits and systems; math and algebra; verbal and written communication.

Ability to:
Operate, repair, and calibrate test equipment; solve complex electronic equations; troubleshoot and repair electronic systems, modules, and circuit cards to the component level both in-house and on-site; read and comprehend schematics, construction plans, and drawings.
