Position Summary
The Undergraduate Academic Advisor plays a crucial role in mentoring and guiding first and second-year students. This position focuses on helping students set academic goals, plan their educational paths, and explore career opportunities through personalized support and outreach initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Advising:
Conduct formal meetings with students to establish meaningful connections through holistic advising techniques. Provide comprehensive academic guidance to both new and continuing students, assisting them in identifying their academic, professional, and personal aspirations.
Maintain meticulous advising records and monitor student performance throughout the academic year. Engage in proactive outreach to students, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations while fostering supportive communication through various channels.
Student Support Services:
Advise students on their academic requirements, including major changes, course selections, and other academic policies. Monitor student retention and progress, offering targeted support to those facing academic challenges.
Collaborate with faculty and staff to create individualized success plans for students, ensuring they have access to necessary resources and support services.
Professional Development:
Utilize best practices in academic advising and contribute to the development of communication strategies regarding key academic milestones. Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance advising effectiveness.
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and a minimum of three years of experience in education or student services.
Preferred:
Master's degree in a related field and prior experience in academic advising or counseling.
Skills and Abilities
Proficient in relevant software applications and databases. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate sound judgment in decision-making processes.
Working Conditions
This position requires availability during standard business hours, with potential for additional hours as needed.
