Middle School Writing Courses Schedule

Average Class Size: 6-8 students

  • UCLA Emerging Writers for Grades 7-9
  • Stanford Emerging Writers for Grades 7-9

Compensation Package: Includes flights, accommodation, meals, and salary.

On-Campus Instructors: These positions are residential, providing instructors with room and board in university housing. Limited commuter roles may be available for local educators.

Writing Courses Offered: Instructors will be hired to teach one or more of the following writing courses. Please specify your preferences in the application:

  • A+ Summer Middle School (Reading/Writing for Middle School): This course immerses students in an environment that fosters critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Students will analyze character development and story arcs through engaging literature and apply their insights to create their own mystery narratives.
  • Emerging Writers for Grades 4-6: This program offers rising 4th-6th graders the chance to enhance their creative writing abilities through interactive exercises and innovative activities that inspire creativity. Students will work on their writing projects, receive constructive feedback, and prepare their work for publication in a class anthology.
  • Emerging Writers for Grades 7-9: This course invites students to explore various writing genres through small group seminars and workshops. Students will develop storytelling skills and participate in diverse electives, culminating in the publication of their polished pieces in a literary magazine.
  • Emerging Writers for Grades 10-12: This advanced program is designed to cultivate students' imaginative writing across genres. Participants will engage in intensive workshops, receive personalized feedback, and present their work in a literary anthology.

Job Responsibilities:

The primary role of the Writing Instructor is to facilitate student learning through the Education Unlimited writing curriculum. Class sizes are intentionally kept small to ensure personalized attention and support for each student’s growth as a writer.

In addition to teaching, instructors will provide one-on-one feedback, assist students in showcasing their work, and manage student progress and deliverables.

Additional On-Campus Duties:

Instructors are expected to assist the camp director with supervision, recreational activities, and administrative tasks. They should be mature, reliable, and collaborative, acting as mentors and guiding students during excursions. The health and safety of students, along with instructional objectives, are paramount.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess substantial writing experience and effective classroom management skills. Key qualifications include:

  • 3+ years of experience teaching writing at the high school or college level (for high school programs).
  • 3+ years of experience teaching writing at the elementary or middle school level (for middle school programs).
  • Bachelor's degree required; MFA preferred.
  • Ability to teach various writing genres is preferred.
  • Experience with publications and knowledge of the publication process is advantageous.
  • Professional demeanor and strong organizational skills.
  • Passion for education and writing.
