Neuroanatomy Summer Program Educator

Stanford, California, United States Education Unlimited Full time
Position Overview

Education Unlimited is dedicated to providing enriching academic summer camps and pre-college programs for students in grades 4-12. Our diverse offerings include camps focused on public speaking, college admissions preparation, various scientific disciplines, performing arts, writing, technology, leadership, and more.

Course Overview:

The Neuroanatomy course invites students to explore the fundamental biology of neurons and their collaborative functions. Participants will connect this knowledge to the anatomy and physiology of different brain systems through the lens of hypothetical neurological cases. The curriculum emphasizes the cerebral cortex, subcortical structures, and the visual processing system. This engaging course incorporates multimedia resources and hands-on projects, including model-building with creative materials, sheep brain dissections, and interactive lab demonstrations, providing a comprehensive understanding of neuroanatomy.

Students will culminate their learning experience with presentations based on case studies, assuming the roles of neurologists, psychiatrists, or neuroradiologists to deliver a Grand Rounds-style presentation.

Instructor Role:

Session Availability: Instructors may apply for one or multiple sessions of this program. Please indicate your availability in your application.

Online Camp Responsibilities: Instructors will be tasked with delivering the Education Unlimited curriculum, supervising students in a virtual environment, organizing and facilitating online labs (students will receive lab supplies at home), and showcasing student projects at the end of the camp. Instructors must maintain accurate records of student progress and submit necessary documentation to the camp director and the Education Unlimited headquarters. A reliable computer and internet connection, along with proficiency in Zoom and Google Classroom, are essential for this role.

In-Person Camp Responsibilities: Instructors will be responsible for teaching the Education Unlimited curriculum, supervising students in various settings, leading classroom labs, and organizing a final showcase of student work. Additionally, instructors will track student progress and submit required documentation to the camp director and the Education Unlimited headquarters.

Beyond teaching duties, instructors are expected to assist the camp director with supervision, recreational activities, and administrative tasks. Candidates should demonstrate maturity, reliability, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues. Instructors will also serve as mentors, guiding students during field trips and excursions. The safety and well-being of students, alongside achieving educational goals, are paramount responsibilities.

In overnight programs, instructors have the option to commute daily or stay on campus, with overnight staff receiving full room and board and participating in evening supervision duties.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates are typically experienced science educators, graduate-level science students, or individuals with substantial teaching or mentoring experience in neuroanatomy.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching neuroanatomy or equivalent subject matter expertise.
  • Experience engaging with high school students in an educational context.
  • A Bachelor's degree is required; preference will be given to candidates with advanced degrees.
  • A strong passion for science education.
  • Professional demeanor and composure.
  • Self-motivated with a strong commitment to follow-through.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
