Position Overview

Education Unlimited is dedicated to providing enriching academic summer camps and pre-college programs for students in grades 4-12. Our diverse offerings include camps focused on public speaking, college preparation, science, acting, writing, computer skills, leadership, video production, and educational tours.

Middle School Writing Courses

Average Class Size: 6-8 students

  • UCLA Emerging Writers for Grades 7-9
  • Stanford Emerging Writers for Grades 7-9

Compensation: Includes flights, housing, meals, and salary.

On-Campus Instructors: These roles are residential, providing instructors with accommodation in university housing. Limited commuter positions may also be available for local educators.

Available Writing Courses: Instructors will be engaged to teach one or more of the following writing courses:

  • A+ Summer Middle School (Reading/Writing for Middle School): This course immerses students in critical thinking and creative problem-solving through engaging literature and writing activities. Students will analyze characters and story arcs while crafting their own mystery narratives, alongside a forensics science unit.
  • Emerging Writers for Grades 4-6: This program enhances creative writing skills through interactive exercises and games, fostering creativity from diverse sources. Students will explore character development, plot progression, and receive personalized feedback to refine their writing.
  • Emerging Writers for Grades 7-9: This unique opportunity challenges students through small group seminars focused on various writing genres. Participants will develop storytelling fundamentals and engage in electives that allow exploration of new writing styles.
  • Emerging Writers for Grades 10-12: This curriculum supports imaginative writing across genres, featuring workshops in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. Students will receive guidance from experienced authors and present their work in a literary anthology.

Job Responsibilities:

The primary role of the Writing Instructor is to facilitate the Education Unlimited writing curriculum. Class sizes are intentionally kept small to ensure personalized attention and constructive feedback for each student. Instructors will also provide one-on-one support and lead a showcase event at the conclusion of the program.

Additional On-Campus Duties:

Instructors are expected to assist the camp director with supervision, recreational activities, and administrative tasks. They should demonstrate maturity and reliability while collaborating with fellow staff members. Instructors will also mentor students and guide them during excursions, ensuring their health and safety while fulfilling educational objectives.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess substantial writing experience and classroom management skills. Key qualifications include:

  • 3+ years of teaching writing at the high school or college level (for high school programs).
  • 3+ years of teaching writing at the elementary or middle school level (for middle school programs).
  • Bachelor's degree required; MFA preferred.
  • Ability to teach various writing genres is preferred.
  • Experience with publications and knowledge of the publication process is advantageous.
  • Professional demeanor and strong organizational skills.
  • Commitment to long hours and self-motivation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a passion for education and writing.
