Position Overview

The Meat Specialist is responsible for executing tasks related to the cutting, preparation, presentation, and sale of meat products. This role is vital in maintaining a positive company image by delivering courteous, friendly, and efficient service to customers and team members consistently. All responsibilities must align with the established standard operating procedures of the team and store.

Key Responsibilities
  • Efficiently cuts, arranges, and displays various meat products including beef, pork, lamb, veal, and poultry.
  • Prepares specialty meat items such as sausages, oven-ready products, and cured meats.
  • Evaluates products to ensure they meet quality standards.
  • Maintains a sampling program to enhance customer experience.
  • Monitors inventory to prevent spoilage and waste.
  • Mentors and supports trainee meat cutters.
  • Arrives punctually at the workstation, well-groomed, and ready for the shift; adheres to all scheduled shifts and participates in required training sessions.
  • Delivers exceptional customer service, promptly addressing customer needs and employing suggestive selling techniques; handles phone inquiries courteously.
  • Maximizes sales potential through effective procedures for prepping, storing, rotating, stocking, and merchandising products.
  • Ensures compliance with established procedures regarding weights and measures, health and sanitation, and safe work practices.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary working environment and ensures equipment is kept to cleanliness and safety standards.
  • Performs opening, mid, and closing duties as assigned; verifies accuracy of signage and pricing.
  • Reports safety hazards and violations immediately.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by leadership.
Required Skills
  • Understanding of meat department processes and procedures.
  • Excellent cutting skills with the ability to break down products into sub-primal and retail cuts.
  • In-depth knowledge of various cuts and cooking techniques for meat and seafood.
  • Ability to visually assess products for quality and freshness.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative team spirit.
  • Ability to convey information clearly and respectfully to team members, customers, and vendors.
  • Commitment to meeting customer service expectations in all interactions.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Passion for natural foods and alignment with the mission of Whole Foods Market.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of and adherence to quality goals.
Experience
  • A minimum of 14 months of retail experience is preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or walk for 6-8 hours during an 8-hour workday.
  • Requires hand use for grasping, fine manipulation, pushing, and pulling.
  • Work involves bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching.
  • Exposure to FDA-approved cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work in temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Ability to work in wet and cold environments.
  • Proficient in handling knives and other cutting tools.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment, including box cutters and electric pallet jacks.
