Position Overview:

Columbus Technologies is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II who is a US Person (US Permanent resident or US Citizen). This role offers a hybrid work environment, requiring on-site presence approximately 20% of the time.

Candidates should be local to the Southern California area, with the ability to attend meetings at our facility with minimal notice. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

This is a full-time direct employment opportunity, offering a W2 position with comprehensive benefits.

The salary range for this position is $79,037 to $112,035, plus bonuses and benefits. Salary is determined based on role, level, and location, with individual pay influenced by factors such as skills, experience, and education.

Key Responsibilities:

The Mechanical Engineer II will be an integral part of a design team dedicated to developing next-generation UAV systems and their subsystems. Responsibilities include:

  • Designing structural components, electro-mechanical systems, payload mechanisms, ground equipment, launching systems, and flight control actuator integration.
  • Conducting thermal analysis and prototype hardware development, including tooling and fixture design.
  • Utilizing CAD tools (SolidWorks), simulation software (SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS), and rapid prototyping techniques (3D printing).
  • Creating manufacturing drawings and bills of materials in accordance with industry standards.
  • Supporting design reviews and assisting project managers with engineering work planning and scheduling.
  • Collaborating with manufacturing and suppliers to ensure effective production of components and assemblies.
  • Addressing problems of moderate complexity, requiring a thorough analysis of various factors.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 2-5 years of experience in designing complex mechanical systems with a proven transition to hardware.
  • Experience in designing machined parts, composite parts, plastic injection molded components, sheet metal parts, wire assemblies, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience in building or prototyping lightweight miniature robotic systems or similar technologies.
  • Knowledge of designing electro-mechanical systems with thermodynamic considerations.
  • Proficiency in mechanical engineering processes and design/analysis tools.
  • Experience in creating engineering drawings compliant with ASME Y14.100 and related standards.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks and familiar with MS Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SolidWorks EPDM.
  • Background in designing tooling or test equipment.
  • Ability to solve basic structural dynamics problems.
  • Understanding of engineering configuration management and material properties.
  • Familiarity with environmental testing, including shock and vibration.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with diverse responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates initiative and a commitment to achieving company goals.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in both office and production environments.
