Position Schedule: This role requires two 12-hour shifts from 7 PM to 7:30 AM, with a commitment to work every other weekend. Additional compensation is available for float and shift differentials applicable to Resource Team PCT roles.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Float Patient Care Technicians will be assigned to various Medical/Surgical units, including but not limited to Cardiac/Telemetry, Neurology, Orthopedic/Oncology, Surgical, and some Critical Care Step Down cases.

The Patient Care Technician embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Key Duties Include:

  • Performing essential nursing care tasks as directed and supervised by a Registered Nurse, such as monitoring vital signs, conducting blood glucose tests, and documenting intake and output.
  • Assisting patients with personal care and daily living activities, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
  • Reporting any abnormal findings or changes in patients' physical, mental, or emotional conditions to nursing staff.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in patient rooms.
  • Exhibiting flexibility, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask effectively, especially in high-pressure situations.
  • Utilizing critical thinking skills to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently as unit needs evolve.
  • Acting as a liaison between patient care units and other departments related to patient care.
  • Responding to telephone calls, intercoms, and call lights courteously, ensuring effective communication with staff, patients, and families.
  • Assisting in managing overall unit workflow in collaboration with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed.
  • Conducting pre-census activities and validating daily admission, discharge, and census lists as required.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation.
  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or nursing students with one semester of clinical experience.
  • CPR certification - Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association.

Preferred:

  • Experience in phlebotomy.
  • Graduation from an accredited Nursing Assistant program or completion of a Phlebotomy course.
