Job Overview
The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of South Carolina (USC) is seeking nominations and applications for the role of Executive Leader of the School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment (SEOE). The SEOE serves as a hub for innovative, integrative, and inclusive research and education across a diverse range of natural and social sciences. The SEOE comprises approximately 35 full-time faculty members and 10 support staff who facilitate programs in Environment and Sustainability (Environmental Science and Environmental Studies), Geology and Geophysics, and Marine Science. The SEOE currently supports around 600 undergraduate majors across four bachelor's degree programs and 60 graduate students pursuing MS, Masters of Earth and Environmental Resources Management (MEERM), and Ph.D. degrees, alongside hosting postdoctoral and visiting researchers and scholars. The ideal candidate will be expected to contribute to one or more of these programs through research and teaching while providing overall leadership to foster collaboration and coordination across disciplines. We are looking for a nationally recognized researcher, an experienced educator, and a proven leader who is enthusiastic about steering the SEOE into its next growth phase. The Executive Leader will: Offer leadership and principled administrative guidance to advocate for faculty, staff, students, and alumni, promoting the mission of the SEOE in teaching, research, and public service/outreach. Act as the representative of the SEOE to the University administration, encouraging collaboration with other schools and colleges at USC, and providing leadership in fostering partnerships across and beyond the USC campus. Articulate the mission and significance of the SEOE's programs to external stakeholders to sustain and enhance both private and public financial and non-financial support. The successful candidate must possess a Ph.D. in a relevant natural or social science field, with experience consistent with academic policy for faculty rank, and be tenurable in the SEOE, preferably at the rank of Full Professor. In addition to its main campus location, the SEOE includes the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences, which features field laboratory facilities, research faculty, and support staff. The Baruch Institute conducts research and supports education aimed at improving the management of marine and coastal resources while advancing fundamental science for the benefit of people and their environment. Established in 1969 through collaborative efforts between the University of South Carolina and the Belle W. Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant natural or social science field, possess experience consistent with academic policy for faculty rank, and be tenurable in the SEOE, ideally at the rank of Full Professor.
