Overview

This position represents the entry-level role within the Court Security Officer classification.

Desired Qualifications

Candidates lacking the desired qualifications may still be considered for this role if they meet the job criteria. Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are essential functions that are common across all roles in this classification and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities for any specific position.

Upholds courtroom and facility regulations regarding safety, security, and orderliness through defensive measures and equipment, including subduing individuals who disrupt court activities, applying handcuffs, and utilizing chemical deterrents. Evaluates potentially disruptive and violent scenarios, taking proactive measures; de-escalates tense situations, responds to emergencies, and coordinates additional security as needed. Sets up, operates, and maintains various electronic systems, including paging systems, wireless microphones, audiovisual equipment, audio and video recorders, overhead projectors, two-way radios, metal detectors, and surveillance cameras. Guides individuals during court proceedings, alerts court personnel, attorneys, and involved parties to be present in the courtroom, assigns seating, checks in defendants, and announces the entrance of the judicial officer. Conducts inspections of the courtroom and facility for explosives, firearms, and other weapons. Searches individuals entering the facility and confiscates unauthorized items. Compiles records and reports, including log notes and incident reports; organizes, logs, and retrieves files, forms, and related information for court staff use. Utilizes automated information systems such as civil and criminal case management systems to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve, inquire, or report on data.

Job Criteria

REQUIREMENTS for Court Security Officer I

Candidates must demonstrate education, training, and/or experience in the following areas: At least six months of experience in security, providing protective services to individuals, facilities, or grounds against trespassing, theft, and other risks. At least six months of experience in maintaining records. At least six months of experience using an automated information system for data entry, updates, modifications, deletions, retrievals, inquiries, and reporting.

Employment Conditions

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of employment. The recruiting agency may require candidates to cover the cost of the background check as part of the conditional offer of employment.
