POSITION OVERVIEW

The Licensed Anesthesia Assistant operates under the supervision of an Anesthesiologist, executing fundamental roles and responsibilities akin to those of an Anesthetist, including specific actions in critical emergency scenarios.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Administer anesthesia under the medical guidance of a certified Anesthesiologist, adjusting anesthetic levels continuously based on patient needs. This includes conducting perioperative evaluations and engaging in delegated educational and research activities.
  • May initiate acute cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPT/ALLS) in emergencies as directed by a physician or established protocols until the supervising anesthesiologist arrives.
  • May provide supportive therapies, such as intravenous fluids and cardiovascular medications.
  • Establishes comprehensive monitoring of patients before, during, and after anesthesia or in other urgent care situations, including ECG, arterial pressure, central venous pressure, arterial blood gas assessments, and routine vital signs.
  • May interpret data from central venous, pulmonary artery, and intracranial catheters and other monitoring devices as necessary.
  • Administers prescribed anesthetics while closely monitoring the cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic status of the patient, along with other medications commonly utilized in anesthetic practice as per protocol or under the direction of the supervising anesthesiologist.
  • Oversees pre and post-anesthetic care, including ventilatory support for patients as assigned by an Anesthesiologist.
  • May employ advanced treatment techniques to implement the prescribed anesthetic plan, including advanced airway management, initiation and adjustment of vasoactive infusions, and administration of blood products as directed by the supervising anesthesiologist.
  • May manage ventilators and other respiratory care parameters as instructed by the physician.
  • May assist in research initiatives led by the Anesthesiologist.
  • May educate others on the principles and practices of anesthesia, respiratory care, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as directed by the Anesthesiologist.
  • May support the Anesthesiologist in collecting routine pre-operative data.
  • The selection of anesthesia and medications is determined by an Anesthesiologist for each patient, except in cases where
    1. Standard orders for specific anesthetic procedures are established.
    2. Life-threatening emergencies arise, necessitating the use of standard therapeutic or resuscitation protocols, with the Anesthesiologist readily available for consultation.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Education: Completion of an accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant training program.
  • Licensure and Certification:
    1. Certification by the NCCAA (National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants).
    2. Registered with the State Medical Board of Ohio as an Anesthesiologist Assistant.
    3. Current BLS Certification.
