Controller Job Description

Two Harbors Investment Corp. is seeking a highly skilled Controller to lead its accounting function and provide strategic financial guidance. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership attributes, excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence senior leadership and collaborate across multiple functional areas.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Financial Reporting: Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial reports, including periodic SEC filings and supplementary reporting for audit committees, counterparties, management, and other stakeholders.
  • Accounting Policies and Procedures: Maintain and update accounting policies and procedures to ensure GAAP and SEC compliance, including the application of new accounting standards.
  • Financial Close Process: Manage the monthly financial close process, including general ledger maintenance, reporting, consolidations, and trend/variance analysis.
  • External Auditors: Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors to ensure smooth audit processes and address any audit findings.
  • Investor Relations: Assist investor relations with external communications, including responding to investor inquiries and providing financial information.
  • IT and Technology: Collaborate with internal and outsourced IT functions to expand back-office technology and automate critical accounting systems and reporting.
  • Forecasting and Planning: Partner with the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) team to build forecasting models using automated reports and data from systems.
  • Legal and Compliance: Work with internal legal counsel on financing agreements, intercompany transactions, and 1940 Act testing.
  • Industry Engagement: Engage with industry peers, accounting system software vendors, and relevant industry groups to stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • Experience: Public accounting experience required, preferably with a Big 4 firm. 10+ years in the financial services industry, preferably with a focus on the U.S. mortgage market.
  • Skills: Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses. Strong process management skills, with experience in designing and managing projects and developing and enhancing systems, operational structure, and procedures.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and manage at all levels of the organization. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to lead and motivate peers to achieve results.
  • Decision Making: Track record of demonstrating good decision making and strategic discipline.
