Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general oversight, this role encompasses a range of patrol and associated responsibilities aimed at crime prevention, safeguarding individuals and property, and enforcing various laws and regulations. The officer will manage crowds and traffic during incidents or special gatherings, assist in investigative efforts, provide guidance and support to the community, and perform related tasks as necessary.

This position entails the full spectrum of law enforcement responsibilities during active duty assignments. Shift patterns and job roles may be adjusted periodically to ensure optimal delivery of effective community safety services.

Key Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Conducting patrols within designated areas using a radio-equipped vehicle to ensure safety, observe conditions, report suspicious activities, and deter crime through visible presence.
  • Responding to urgent calls for assistance, disturbances, thefts, accidents, and other incidents to protect public safety and resolve issues.
  • Providing information and assistance to the public in various situations; documenting reports and addressing community concerns.
  • Coordinating emergency resources at accident scenes.
  • Searching for missing individuals.
  • Following up on crime reports, including managing found property, serving legal documents, and investigating various incidents.
  • Managing evidence and property in accordance with legal standards; preparing items for auction or disposal post-court proceedings.
  • Responding to traffic incidents and documenting reports; managing crowds and traffic during events.
  • Transporting seized or found property as required.
  • Conducting investigations, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and preparing reports on incidents.
  • Participating in training sessions and workshops to stay updated on law enforcement practices and community safety initiatives.
  • Overseeing the proper use and maintenance of departmental equipment.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Understanding of law enforcement principles, practices, and techniques related to patrol, traffic enforcement, and crime scene management.
  • Familiarity with investigation techniques and legal procedures.
  • Knowledge of evidence handling and courtroom procedures.
  • Awareness of applicable laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency in safety practices related to law enforcement duties.
  • First aid and CPR techniques.
  • Safe operation of vehicles under various conditions.
  • Recordkeeping and office management skills.
  • Effective communication skills in English.
  • Customer service techniques for engaging with the community.

Education and Experience

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Completion of high school education. Specialized training in law enforcement or a related field is highly desirable.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Possession of a Basic Certificate issued by the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).
  • Maintenance of firearms qualification.

Physical Demands

Must possess the mobility to work in various environments, including office settings and outdoor locations; maintain physical standards necessary for emergency response; and perform tasks requiring physical strength and stamina.

Environmental Conditions

Employees may be exposed to various environmental factors, including loud noises, extreme temperatures, and hazardous situations. Interaction with the public may involve challenging circumstances.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and background investigation is required. Flexibility to work extended hours or respond to emergencies is essential.
