Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Surgical Instrument Technician to join our team at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. As a key member of our Sterile Processing Department, you will be responsible for ensuring the highest level of quality and safety in the preparation and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate decontamination equipment according to established policies and procedures
  • Decontaminate and clean instruments and equipment adhering to hospital policies for universal precautions
  • Inspect instruments and equipment to ensure proper functioning and notify supervisor of unserviceable items
  • Assemble and wrap trays for sterilization following established procedures for completeness, labeling, and documentation
  • Load and operate sterilizers according to established policies and procedures, documenting contents and processing information according to departmental policy
  • Perform quality assurance monitors and documentation for sterilization, including Bowie Dick, biological testing, chemical indicators, according to established policies and procedures
  • Communicate with end-user departments when sterilization or supplies are delayed or when a delay is anticipated
  • Perform assigned cleaning duties to maintain a clean and orderly environment
  • Accurately complete inventory lists for trays and surgeon preference cards
  • Respond to requests from OR rooms with urgency and by priority
  • Anticipate OR nurses' needs to prevent problems from occurring
  • Write self-evaluations and recognize areas for growth and improvement
  • Participate in quality improvement activities for departmental and section-specific processes
  • Exercise authority when appropriate, recognizing needs and directing activities to departmental advantage
  • Use initiative to resolve problems with appropriate action and follow-through, including documentation for Performance Improvement
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of surgical terminology, instrumentation, and supplies
  • Basic computer skills
  • Sterile processing experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • IAHCSMM CRCST certification
